+thegoldenband Posted November 7, 2010 Share Posted November 7, 2010 Based on my experiences with a beige G3, many will work, but not all -- with the caveat that I was mostly running OS 8.6 on that machine, and OS 9 may be less compatible. For example, I seem to remember that Shufflepuck Cafe did work under 8.6, whereas the original version of Dungeon of Doom didn't. Dutil's Jack worked well, and I played it quite a lot. It wouldn't surprise me if your success rate decreased linearly with the age of the game, but it's hard to say why: copy protection schemes? Deprecated OS calls? No idea. I'd say to keep the IIfx set up for the best compromise between authenticity and convenience, but I don't know how much of the 68k software requires a 68040 (this page may help with that), or whether the IIfx will run the oldest games. Still, it's a fantastic machine. Otherwise, the G3 should be able to run most games, and you can always use an emulator for the ones it can't. Since all 68k code is emulated on PPC machines anyway, using a separate app is no less authentic than running it at the OS level. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

There were at least some versions of vMac for OS 9 and earlier; see here for more info. There may have been other emus, too -- I don't remember what else I've got stashed away on my beige G3... madmax2069 Posted November 7, 2010 Share Posted November 7, 2010 (edited) Its the way the newer OS handles colors ( or doesn't handle them), heck vette doesn't even like to work on my Performa 475 due to how it handles the colors. The newer the machine and the newer the OS had less capability to handle older software, some due to code, some due to supported colors and the way the machine and OS handles colors. Those things are amazing, especially if you are running System 6. They are also appreciating more than the Classic and G3. You can always get another Classic or G3 later if you have regrets, but once the IIfx is gone it may be years before you find another one for sale and you'll almost certainly pay more for the replacement than what you sold yours for. I have many 68k Macs, but my mains that I always keep set up are an SE dual floppy with external hard drive running System 6 and an 840AV running 8.1 for anything that requires an 030 or 040. I also have an SE/30 that I keep around, but there are several games that seem to go too fast on it. I guess for now I'll do a Classic/G3 combo, no idea where I'll find the room though.
