Ultima

No Ultimas were ever releaed in cartridge form on the Atari 8-bit computers. They were all disk-based, and some (all?) of them were multiple disks (or sides). The only Ultimas released on the Atari 8-bit were I through IV. I believe the first three Ultimas were one disk, and Ultima IV was two, but I could be wrong (it's been a long time!)

All the Ultimas came with a 'Player Master' disk in order to maintain ones 'character' disk. Ultima I was on 1 disk I blieve though (program disk and side 2 was the player master). You had to have your own disk to play since you needed to create a character on it :).

Ultima I was 'ok', but II, II and IV were awesome. If starting from scratch Ultima IV could take 2 weeks to finish where I could finish II and III in pretty much a day now :)

If you never experienced and Ultima game and want to check it out Ultima II is fairly rich in story and not too difficult to get started. III and IV introduced multiplayer parties which makes management of the game a bit more difficult (IV has 8!)

If you have any questions let me know.

I have Ultima I - IV sitting in front of me. Ultima I has one two-sided disk. Ultima II has two disks; one is double-sided and the other is single sided. Ultima III has one two-sided disk. Ultima IV has one two-sided disk.

For RPG fans some of the Ultima games are well worth playing either

on a classic machine or via emulation. Ultima IV is really the high

point of the series. Its quite an excellent adventure and introduced

a system of moral questions that affected your play. Ultima VI was

the first VGA game, its cool but Ultima VII (parts 1 and 2) is

awesome. The other chapters are okay but I, II and III are not

reccomended mainly because they are very creaky early 80s

games. RPGs were pretty crude back then unlike arcade games.

So only the most dedicated retro gamer would sit through them.

Check 'em out they are worth it!

Kind of funny...it was so innovative at the time that a lot of people

hated it! The RPG's at the time usually let you ask the people the

questions, take all their stuff, slaughter them, and you'd still win.

So right away, people had to learn to play all over again.

I have to disagree. You should play them in order as there are characters and such that show up again and again in the series. I remember seeing Ultima I on a friends Apple II and was blown away by it; of course he was blown away by Star Raiders. Ultima II was kind of easy as you could just sit off shore in a ship blasting monsters with your cannons and they couldn't touch you. I though Ultima III and IV were great.

I think I have all the disk images for Ultima I - IV if you want them. I also have all the docs which I can scan.

Ultima II on the Apple was my first exposure and I was hooked. Ultima II had a few twists to it which made it difficult to finish - Find so and so under 'Atree' :)

The rockets and space travel were really fun!

Ultima III was a let down to me cause I finished it new in like 3 days - Ultima IV was another story :) - IV is the best IMHO and most folks would prob rate IV and VII as the 2 to play.

Yes, there are character references throughout the games Mr Smith :)

Its true that to get the full Ultima experience playing them in order will

reward you with the recurring characters and other tidbits. However I

think the best start point is Ultima IV. Its the best of the old ones and

starts the second trilogy. Its too bad that the final trilogy fell so flat. VII

is an amazing CRPG, yet VIII and IX stumbled so badly.
