NIAD
Donkey Kong Junior SuperGame 5 Screen VersionNo Code Required I know I originally stated that I would only post 3rd Party/Homebrew titles in this series, but after talking to a number of people over the last couple months, I have come to the realization that a lot of people don't have the best versions of unreleased Coleco software. When Coleco made available their unreleased software titles to ADAM Users Groups, they did so with one stipulation, that any copyright information within the program would be removed. What I plan to do is post all the un-edited titles (SubRoc SuperGame, Troll's Tale, etc.) so that everyone will have the BEST available versions. The first of these titles, Donkey Kong Junior - 5 Screen Version, was never "hacked" to remove any copyright information, rather it was hacked to remove the requirement to enter a specific code using the hand controller in order to have access to the 5th screen. This version I have posted will automatically play the 5th screen when you get far enough into the game, think the 9th screen... pleas forgive my uncertainty as I don't have time to play it right now. Aside from having the 5th screen (which was originally intended for the official release of the DK Jr. SuperGame, but Nintendo would not allow it), everything else is identical to the official release... intro screen, intermission screens, hall of fame, etc. Enjoy. ed1475
I've got a DDP of the version that requires the code to be entered (Revision 13). At the number of players screen hold both fire buttons and press 1321212. A message appears on the screen "Revision 13 Master sequence is activated" and the 5th screen is playable. I hope you continue to review 3rd party titles also. I found this website a few weeks ago while doing a search for Temple of the Snow Dragon. It has the manuals for several 3rd party ADAM adventure games. NIAD
I've got 5 different versions in image format of Super DK Jr. - 5 Screen. There's a DDP and Disk Rev. 13 that only requires the Left and Right Fire Buttons to be pressed to activate the 5th screen, a DDP and Disk Rev. 14 that does not require a code be entered and the final version just states HACKED and I can't remember for the life of me what the difference is. Always loved that "Master sequence is activated" message... I will continue on with more 3rd party ADAM wares as there are still a number of good titles that I haven't covered... including Temple of the Snow Dragon. Thanks for the link you provided, I was hoping to one day come across the Mage Quest manual!! +
arcade124
This looks like a thread worth bumping. This version of DK Jr. Is very interesting. To clarify: the first prototype required a code to enter the fifth screen, the second prototype didn't, and the final release didn't have the screen at all? NIAD
The original prototype (as far as I understood and remember from the late 80s) required a long code to be entered via the controller keypad for the 5th screen to be playable, otherwise it was skipped. This was probably done by the programmer(s) because Nintendo balked at Coleco taking liberties with their games and forced Coleco to release the standard four screen versions of both DK games to the public. Thankfully this five screen version was not lost and was shared with the Adam community. There were a couple hacks by some knowledgeable programmers to reduce the length of the easter egg code until eventually it was eliminated completely. Indeed a great game made better by the addition of the fifth screen. Too bad the DK - Super Game didn't get the same treatment, but seeing as it was programmed after DK Jr., Nintendo's feelings were already known and the concept artwork for the 5th screen is all that exists. I think Sean Kelly has this concept artwork iirc.
chuckwalla
Very good game, could do without the 5th screen, but very good.
arcade124
Very good game, could do without the 5th screen, but very good. The fifth screen was great! I know some might say that it takes away from the arcade experience, but the fact is, it's a new screen of DK Jr. I wish DK had also gotten this treatment, but DK Jr deserves it more because DK's got things like D2K for new screens. NIAD
Very good game, could do without the 5th screen, but very good. Play the official release of DK Jr. Super Game if you don't like the inclusion of the fifth screen.
