Sdrive Issue with 130xe

Hello all, I am having an issue using one of my SDRIVE's with my Stock 130xe (IDE Plus 2.0 Not connected during initial test). A little background, I have 2 Sdrives, 1)SDRIVE Nuxx from the latest run , 2)SDRIVE from Morethangames,atari8maestro.com.

1) I have tried three different 2gb SD cards, 1)PNY, 2)Kingston and 3)Sandisk

2) Used the SDRIVE.ATR with the newest date I could find from 2011, with all 3 SD cards

3) With SDRIVE MTG in 130xe loads very fast on all 3 sd cards, no real issues.

4) with SDRIVE NUXX in 130xe loads very slow, about one load beep per second, there is a buzzing from the speaker in between beeps. the buzzing is not like a noise or feedback, its just like the buzz when the atari boots into basic just before the ready prompt appears.

5) I tried 2 different SIO cable with same results.

6) I dug out one of my 800xl and using same power supply as i did with 130xe, same SIO cables, Sdrive nuxx runs normally may actually be faster then the SDRIVE MTG on the 130xe, SDRIVE MTG also run very fast on this 800xl.

One other thing I did notice, I was using my SDRIVE to load the files needed to configure my IDE Plus 2.0 on 130xe,

7) Sdrive NUXX when connected to 130xe with IDE Plus 2.0, IDEtoCF adapter and Rtime8 cart. SDRIVE NUXX, barely works. I get the same buzzing sound listed above but the load beeps are about 3-4 seconds apart.

8) Sdrive MTG with same configuration listed on line 7, works fast, no issues.

9) I did not try the Either SDRIVE with IDE Plus 2.0 connected to the 800xl.

So, I was wondering if anyone has had a similar issue, or maybe an idea of what might be the issue with the SDRIVE NUXX on my 130xe?

On a another note IDE Plus 2.0 is crazy fast!! Gotta Love that!!

Best Regards

Some Atari system have capacitors installed on the SIO port for noise filtering, these can interfere with IO when present.

This sounds like the case with your 130XE.

You need to remove C301-C310. As you look at the board from the top and SIO at the back they are to the left and bottom of the SIO socket. In some machines these are not populated and they are soldered directly to the SIO legs. Either way just snip them off as flush as you can to the board.

Removing them will have no adverse effects.

I opened up the 130xe and there was two clusters of caps soldered directly to the SIO port, I clipped them off the board and wiggled them until they came off of the SIO port, after reassembly my SDRIVE NUXX work beautifully and very fast.

Thanks to everyone for their help. I now have to try an XF551 that I though was bad, may be related to the same problem.

Are those caps or resistors? I noticed that they were present on my 130xe when I opened it up to mess around with the keyboard. But I thought they looked like resistors. This is the bundle that looks like they are soldered to the mainboard and then to each leg of the SIO port.

not all 130XE boards had the places for them, they were a later addition, Rev4 Mobo's were the cutoff... earlier had the caps (look like light blue colored resistors) soldered to the ground plane and each leg of the SIO port, and newer had C301-C310 next to the SIO plug... either way, snip them and be rid of them...

sloopy.

these caps being removed/clipped is very common, especially for systems from people who used high speed I/O drives (USD, XF551, Indus GT, etc) so many have already been done... i find more clipped/removed then still installed in the 130XE's i have....

A bit off topic, but would any of you happen to have scope output showing these lines with and without the caps? I'm just curious how they affect the signals... I've got a scope here, but no 130XE to do the testing with.

Jakub did this with the SIO2SD and put the traces online at his website:

http://sio2sd.gucio....ki/HighSpeed_en

Since SIO2SD and SDrive aren't that different, I'd expect the SDrive results to be similar.

so long,

Hias
