charin
Which are the best non-rare cartridges for the Atari 8-bit computers? I already have one Atari 800XL and a small set of cartridges, but I don't know much about the system, it never was produced in my country. I also have a Atari tape recorder but I don't have the I/O cable with that weird connector to plug into the computer. Super-Genius!
My two favorites are: Miner 2049er and Choplifter!! Mark http://www.hollex.net

Nukey Shay
#1: Star Raiders (must-have!) #2: Ms. PacMan (Best home version of it's time IMO) #3: Defender (Arcade perfection again) #4: Robotron2084 (that dual joystick holder is just too easy to misplace) Defender was slightly edged out by Ms.PacMan since you need to use the keyboard for Smart Bombs and Hyperspace (a minor gripe...but it's there). This might sound hypocritical since I chose Star Raiders first, but that one was made that way from the start (no previous version to compare it to)...so the keyboard use was part of the gameplan. Robotron will have you nailing controllers to a board if you lose the holder...so it loses a couple points for joystick abuse.
Goochman
Let see here............ Star Radiers! Airball Crossbow Pole Position Donkey Kong Defender Donkey Kong Jr Frogger Kaboom Necromancer Robotron 2084 Turmoil
+davidcalgary29
...and let's not forget about "Joust"...which I still think was the best game produced, ever! Also: 1. "Captain Beeble" (crude, but fun) 2. "Moon Patrol" 3. "Barnyard Blaster"
Gregory DG
The ones I found myself playing the most were Star Raiders, Donkey Kong, DK Jr., Dig Dig, Popeye, and Millipede. I was really into arcade conversions, and these were 100x better than their 2600 counterparts.
Callipygous
Agree with all of those above. Add River Raid and the superb, but underappreciated Mario Bos. to the lists.
charin
Thank you all for the tips! If someone has a set of Atari 8-bit/C64/other carts available for trade please contact me. I can offer a Brazilian Atari 2600 clone or something else for a set of carts if someone likes foreign stuff. http://member.newsguy.com/~charin/collection/trade.htm Greetings, Sergio

+Sauron
Defender - Better than the arcade, IMO, as the controls aren't a major PITA. Galaxian - Great game, despite what anyone else may say. Eastern Front - Great strategy game, one of the reasons I need an 8bit again. Star Raiders - One of the greatest games of all time, and it's best on the 8bit. Breakout - Another of my favorites. Not sure if XEGS games will work on the 800XL (will they?), but if they do, then get the following: Ace of Aces - Combat flight arcade/sim, with pretty darn good graphics. Hardball - Great little baseball game, as long as you don't mind only having two teams to choose from. Quite a few more great games; I'll vouch for most of the ones already listed by others. Nukey Shay
Yeah, those two are playable on the computer as well. Not sure if there were specific versions needed for the XE game platform. And don't get me wrong, Galaxian is a great port. "Spearing" the bad guys is kind of a neat quirk. It's just the diving sound that kills it for me. I suppose a hack is in order
Callipygous
Only the XE carts that require 64K will not work on the 400/800. All XE carts work on the 800XL or an XE machine (65XE, 130XE, XEGS). They also work on an 600XL upgraded to 64K.
Jayson
Got to go with Miner 2049er. Way to many hours burned there.
