Un-official PS1 thread

I declare this the OFFICIAL PS1 Thread, I mean, why not?

Seriously though yeah I bought into the original Playstation early on back in the day and certainly was not disappointed! Sure it is easy to go back and complain about how many of those PS1 3D titles aged poorly but it was mind blowing stuff at the time! Now add the glorious visuals of many more traditional titles with fully realized orchestral soundtracks and rendered cinematics not to mention how many genres of games were released for the system. Oh yeah many of my best gaming memories originated on the good old Playstation!

Yeah, it should be the official ps1 thread :rolling:

I'll change that soon. Anyways, it's a nice system, and the controllers are perfect. So perfect that the ps3 controller still uses the same overall design.

I just dropped two of them off along with a dance pad at the Salvation Army this morning.

Honestly, the original PS1 has very little going for it in the way of holding on to the original hardware. My PS2 plays all those games.

The blue one is kinda cool, though.

Does your PS2 play mod-detecting or patched japanese imports? That's why I have to keep my PSones around.

Same here! I have a ps2 slim, and a ps1 fat. Their ac adapters the same, but the av out is different. Every time I want to play ps2 games (and official ps1 games if i feel like playing them) I have to take the ac adapter out of the ps1, ands put it in the ps2. It's the same thing if I want to play ps1, gee. It's annoying at times but can be worth it ;)

I spent many hours playing Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, and the Oddworld games. Probably my top favorite games for the system.

I have Parappa the Rapper but the game resets after I complete the fourth stage (I think it's the fourth...been a while). There aren't any visible scratches and I'm pretty sure it's not a demo copy. Weird...

I bought a PS1 when they dropped the price to $100 for the console and 1 controller. I bought 2 games along with it, one of them being Alien Trilogy. I finished the first 2 parts of the trilogy but never quite made it through the third part. Alien Trilogy and Medal of Honor are my 2 favorites on the system so far. A few other faves are Vigilante 8 second offense, Sled Storm, Destruction Derby, and Crash Team Racing. I still have the console (which works fine) and the box.

I have such good memories of the PSX. There was such a good variety in games.

I remember beating MGS numerous times on the different difficulty levels, such an immersive game.

I remember about 3 years ago when I was still at uni, my housemates girlfriend brought over Abe's Oddysee. Me and her played it for pretty much 3 days straight, making sure we rescued all our fellow Mudokons. We'd take it in turns.

I was really pissed off when it was xmas day and the big box turned out to be a PSX. I wasn't a brat about it or anything, but I highly expressed to my parents before hand that I do NOT want a Playstation, I would like an N64.

Looking back, there's a lot of great memories. Wish I still had a lot of my games.

I made the cardinal mistake of selling my PS1 stuff years ago...I traded it all in for a 'new' Gameboy Advance SP, which gave me more of the retro vibe I was going for then...and now. Still, kinda regret trading it in for the loss I did...I mean, my stuff was as minty fresh as possible. Two Guncons, original Rumbleshocks, bunch of games....

I just didn't think I'd get nostalgic for it. And to be honest, I don't, really. I didn't get mine until late 1998...Metal Gear Solid was the title that made me require one. I rented one prior to that and fooled around with that Namco racing game I can't quite remember now, but I wasn't sold on the games early on. Then came MSG...but I must say that the first Resident Evil really got me back into gaming. I friggin LOVED that game, and part two as well. Many, many nights playing the shiz outta those two....Nemesis, not so much. And Gran Turismo...another AWESOME game, that one I do miss. And my collection of Guncon games...not many were released for it, but I had the standard Time Crisis and the Japanese Ernie n Bert game (forget the name, lol). Both were awesome.

I do remember that Time Crisis 2 was hot in the arcades around that time, and I was certain that the PS1 would get a version...why not, they had part one, didn't they? Well it never did come out...and I wasn't about to get a PS2 anytime soon (that would take another few years, 2005-ish...still own it, play only retro games on it) and I was pretty much done with newer games by then.

The PS1 was a lot of fun, but I caught the wave on it's way out for sure...kinda like comparing the later NES games to, say, Urban Champion! Same went for the PS2. I haven't bought anything since then, nor do I intend to. I've always loved retro games, even back in 93 when I traded a brand new SNES for a huge lot of old 2600 games (which were sadly lost; choose who you lend to wisely!). I'm back with my big three, though: 2600, Colecovision and NES. That's all this guy needs!....oh, maybe a MAME sometime down the line.

And another fave for PS1...not truly a PS game, but is one I played to death: Panzer General! What a great game...horrible version compared to the PC, but good enough for me.

I just didn't think I'd get nostalgic for it.

I didn't think that I would either. Stupidly I sold my whole lot to help me buy my first car. It's funny, looking back on it, I had so many good games for the PSX, but when I look back to my PS2 collection, which I still have, I've just got a heap of games that as a majority, am not interested in, not in the slightest. Over half are racing titles. Looking back, the reasoning because of this is that of the games I owned, the games for the PSX were the ones that I would actually play since the PS2 was backwards compatible. I rented a lot of games for the PS2, great games, finished them in the week/weekend, and never bought them. The games that I do own were mainly presents. Not a whole lot of memories for the PS2.

Maybe I'll add collecting a heap of PSX games for 2012, although I do really want to focus on my current goals.

Excellent console, bought it on release, actually traded my SNES and 100 cib games for it. I remember being in London when the PS was released, some sort of computer show. a UK gaming magazine (Ultimate) had a huge stage they were doing competitions, giving away tees and one guy shouting every minute 'Playstation' like a maniac. PSX impact was huge in UK. All gaming magazines raved about it. For years it was the best console with the best games out there. Of course lots of British software houses supported the PSX, that helped a lot. PS belongs at number two in the worlds 'best console' chart (VCS number one of course)

I had some of the best video game memories ever on that machine. The two games that made me a fan were the year Resident Evil 1 came out and Final Fantasy 7.

Here are some memory moments:

Resident Evil 1 - The dogs smashing through the windows

Resident Evil 2 - The whole game. The ending. Everything.

Final Fantasy 7 - Aeris WTF?? Rrrrr!!!

Parasite Eve - The intro "Carrie" scene just sucks you into the bizarre and unique story.

Metal Gear Solid - Psycho Mantis fight

Gran Turismo 2 - The best racer-sim game I ever played at that point in my life.

Castlevania SOTN - Beezlbub fight. Yuck. I remember playing it forever and getting over 200% completion.

Tekken 3 - The intro, the mini games, the graphics (at the time) and the great gameplay.

Tenchu - my first pure stealth game. Ninjas were cool again.

My roommate in college bought a PS1 around '96 and we played a ton of games when we should have been doing home work. We rented them quite often at 49 and more video store and Blockbuster. We only bought a few games because we were poor college students. The ones that we played constantly were Twisted Metal 1 - 3 (2 was the best by far), Medal of Honor (It's always fun running around killing Nazis as Winston Churchill on multiplayer), and Army Men. We hooked up a poor boys surround system (some '70s era Polk speakers and a cheap Kenwood surround receiver) and blasted out our town house. Neighbors constantly complained which made it even more fun. I remember playing Army Men and if you ran over the opponent in a tank and kept backing up over the body the scream of the dead player would just keep going on and on which sounded hilarious through the surround system. I think we regularly stayed up until 3 or 4 in the morning playing that one.

I'm of the school of thought that to truly have the experience of the console, for me personally, it needs to be the way I remember it. This is of coarse an obsessives perspective. PS3 or PS2 will do fine for those quick impromptu moments with family or testing out a new acquisition. However, if you are going to spend some quality time with a PS1 classic, for me it has to be on the original hardware. Just like that morning in 1995 I stood in line at Babbage's in Greenfeild mall, Milwaukee Wisconsin and picked it up the very first day. It was right after my 18th birthday and I'd purchased my first video projector at the time (an Advent 1977 that actually had a/v inputs) from a used TV store with the $100 cash my parents gave me. It was a crappy projector, but it started my obsession with playing epic games on big screens. The Wipeout and Jumping Flash demos packed in, as well as the Ridge Racer that I purchased that day all got lots of play. Shortly after release, I picked up Mortal Kombat 3 and Doom. Those were some great times.

Recently I'd tried to collect all PS1 games. Having gotten over 450 long and/or black boxes I determined that there was just too much junk on the platform. My collecting needed focus, so I've been trying to cut back and keep only those items that thrill me, or that I'd play. Even that is too many, but hey, I'm a collector. What can I say. Much love for the PS1 here. The collection is comprised of two kiosks (both need work), several systems, accessories, hundreds of games, a neon sign, several posters and banners, lots of good memories, and a strong future for the PS1 in my game room.

In 1997, I decided to buy a college classmate's N64. So I missed out on the PS1, until about three years ago when Is tarted collecting in earnest. I own about 50 ps1 games now, but frankly, I find it hard to go back and play a lot of them. Games that rely heavily on 3d often have simply not aged well. Games that use 2d are not so bad.

As I've said in another thread, my older brother was a game tester for Sony when the PS 1 came out. We had nearly every game.... I played way too much PS 1 in the late 90s,such great memories. I still remember when it first came out and the games were still packaged in the longboxes. Road Rash was the first PS game I ever played and that one had awesome music.

I loved Crash Bandicoot (beat the game once and saw the ending), Gran Turismo 2, Jumping Flash (very underrated game),Cool Boarders 3, Twisted Metal 1 & 2....tho the weirdest game I played on that was Tail of the Sun. I remember my brothers making fun of that game.

My favorite PlayStation 1 game ever has to be Bust a Move 2..

In another thread (this one http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/191768-favourite-era-and-consoles/) i said that the PSX/N64/Saturn era is the worst era of gaming. And I still heavily believe that. The games have not aged well visually to the point where a lot are just horrible. But does anyone else think that this was also a good time for experimentation?

How do our old IP's fit in with the new hardware? What is achievable in this new hardware? What constraints does it have, and how can we work around them?

Those are questions that get me a little excited when thinking about this era.
