olavese@online.no
I was trying to find out what a XEGS system is worth, but ebay had none (at least the two last times I searched). I have two PAL consoles, one is loose with PSU and the other is boxed (I think not complete, as the light gun is gone I think), but should have keyboard and the games packed with it (FS II, Bug Hunt and another LG game I think) Also have loads of duplicates (not sorted yet), that I'd want to swap or get rid of. Downside is of course my location, Norway and we probably have the highest shipping costs in the world. Was easier when everything was on ebay, could check prices and try to be reasonable. Also have a NTSC Jaguar, loose console with one controller and some 15 games or so, including AvP (loose), Tempest 2000 boxed, but no tray and a few other nice titles. Is the best place to try here in the marketplace or do you recommend eBay or Amazon? Thanks
Rybags
Generally they're pretty cheap. Over here they tend to be the most common occurrence on eBay. Worth more with the keyboard, IMO you're probably looking at $20+ for a loose keyboard, $30+ for an Xegs with no keyboard, $40+ for one with keyboard. Add $5 to that if a power supply is included. Although many XEs came with the shitty epoxied ones that overvolt. As for desirability, I'd put it about second last. 400 being last. 600XL mega easy to convert to 64K and much more compact, better looking and ergonomic than an XEGS. AtariLeaf
I have two of them but I don't use them often. Like Rybags, I don't really like it as much as other models of the 8 bit line. I just love the 800XL and use that for play, even though the XEGS has composite. I hate the look of the XEGS and having to use the plug in keyboard takes up too much space for games that need the keyboard to play.
Gunstar
I like the idea of a detachable keyboard, but as you said, they take up too much room due to their design. If I had one, I'd modify it to have the cartridge slot and buttons moved to another location and use the XEGS base for a monitor stand. Maybe do that anyway without modifying it since I rarely use the cartridges anymore anyway. But then you come back to the ugly grey and XE styling...I used to think XE/ST products looked cool in the 80's, now, not so much.
boxpressed
Rybags has the prices right, IMO. It's not so easy to find one with the gray matching joystick, and the light guns are often missing a decal on one side for some strange reason. My XEGS came with the PS known as the "Mini," which is reliable. It looks a lot like the crappy "Ingot", so be sure that you look carefully at photos. Here is the AA thread with photos: http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/95416-power-supplies/page__hl__ingot All that said, I like the 800XL better. The XEGS is too big with the keyboard attached, and I hate its angled ports for the joysticks and SIO cable.
sloopy
Not to mention for NTSC, they still have a few new ones for sale from B&C... sloopy.
kogden
I see them on ebay for 50 bucks pretty regularly.... I'd get one if it weren't for the hideous giant pastel buttons and awkward cartridge slot placement which would get worse with a MyIDE w/ Transcend DOM sticking out the top. A tall monitor stand would be necessary. Not really super rare. I find them LESS desirable than a 400 actually 400's are fun with a 48K RAM upgrade and a keyboard that hasn't been worn out. But saw in your links, they mostly call them XE Video Game System ... Thanks, at least I know approx. price ... Most of these were NTSC, right? +wood_jl
Hmmm... PAL XE Game System may indeed be rare - I do not know! I see only ONE on Ebay UK.... http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?ff3=4&pub=5574883395&toolid=10001&campid=5336500554&customid=&mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fitm%2FAtari-XE-System-Console-keyboard-PSU-joystick-game-Tested-working-%2F130639984003%3Fpt%3DUK_VintageComputing_RL%26hash%3Ditem1e6abff583 .....and it looks a bit yellowed (keyboard) and is NOT cheap. I do not know of the Euro power supplies, but the Yankee power supply that LOOKS like that one is the troublesome "Ingot" that fries the computer over time. To the sharp-eyed Euro: Is that the standard power supply for Euro XEGS in the picture of that Ebay UK auction? B&C Computervisions has so much stuff (incl PAL) that they may have one. The shipping to Europe would be out of this world expensive, however.
Fox-1 / mnx
To the sharp-eyed Euro: Is that the standard power supply for Euro XEGS in the picture of that Ebay UK auction? My PAL XEGS has that one too.
mimo
I have 3 pal xegs' with the smaller PSU, and one with the type in the picture. people are buying the xegs keyboard for the upcoming 7800 add on
Nikos Pachtas
I can give to one of your XEGS's a nice sunny home at Greece. Send me a message, if interested.
oky2000
Strange that nobody really likes them yet nobody offered to sell me a yellowed one. Must be because it was me asking lol
WizWor
Well, I like them and own three. One of which is my everyday machine. The composite out works well with my lcd tv.
Skarrj
I love the xegs, even though it looks like the easter bunny vomited on it. Luckily myatari still has a few unopened ones so I was able to grab one.
OldSchoolRetroGamer
I like them and always thought they looked cool and have wanted one for a long time but now as I am trying to refine my collection considering I have an 800XL and 130XE I cannot justify it outside of collecting purposes just to say I have one. DesertJets
I don't think they are rare on eBay and the like but they aren't super common (I'd say 2-3 tops at any given time that are not being sold by Myatari). I am really beginning to think I got really lucky when I picked up my XEGS last fall. I ended up getting a complete XEGS system with both pack-in games (but no documentation) plus a 2600Jr with a joystick/paddles and ~20 commons for a touch over $30 before shipping. I knew I wanted an 8-bit but didn't particularly care what I got -- the only emotional attachment to the XEGS was that it was something I wanted as a kid when it was new. achtbits
I've been looking for a PAL (B) XE game machine with the keyboard for quite some time now here in Germany. Last week I went to a retro game computer exchange in the Netherlands hoping to get one there, but nothing. Indeed I like how it looks and it's better suited for the living room than one of the XE/XL systems. So if one of you has a spare one to sell to me, please PM me. Thorsten Günther
To the sharp-eyed Euro: Is that the standard power supply for Euro XEGS in the picture of that Ebay UK auction? The XE Game System is somewhat rare in Europe (the most common machines are the 800XL and the 800XE), but not quite as rare as the 400/800 (these pop up on eBay UK from time to time, but in mainland Europe they seem to be exceptionally rare and usually sell in the range of 70 Euros (400) and 120 Euros (800) at least- or higher). That PSU ist the usual one I've purchased with any XL or XE machine from the UK (the wall plugs were added by the customer there IIRC, and they contain the fuse). It's heavy as a brick, and glued together - I usually just keep the DIN 7-pin plug and cord and discard the rest iof these, as any modern stabilized 5V wall wart is better and much lighter. mimo
I would not say that the 800xe is a common item in Europe, maybe in Poland, but not the rest of Europe.
KubaCZ
I would not say that the 800xe is a common item in Europe, maybe in Poland, but not the rest of Europe. 800XE is very common here in CZ. 800XLs are somewhat rarer, but not too much. Then there sometimes show 130XE's and 65XE's, I've seen 600XL only few times, same with XEGS. And 400/800 I've seen only 1 time each and bought both of them Edited March 12, 2012 by KubaCZ
Thorsten Günther
The 800XE is also very common in Germany (not only in the former GDR i.e. behind the Iron Curtain) - it was sold here instead of the 65XE (although this is AFAIK just a differently labelled machine, as the European 65XEs have the ECI).
