Depends on how you count. Nolan and Ted didn't really consider themselves employees since they were the owners. There's also the matter of the actual first employee, Nolan's babysitter Cynthia V., w \ho became their secretary. She was hired before Al but doesn't usually get counted because Al was the first engineering hire.
Also, they have it wrong in the article, that's just the hire date on the badge not when the badge was from. Badges were of course re-issued and numbers stayed with you for life even if you left and came back.The first badges through '73 were Syzygy badges.
