November Morning. NTSC, 45 colors. PAL, 37 colors.

Shelby Cobra. NTSC, 54 colors. PAL, 62 colors (yes, this PAL actually has more colors!)

Tiger Family. NTSC, 82 colors.

For the time being, Tiger Family is NTSC only. I have not gotten a satisfactory conversion on PAL yet. But this picture looks o.k, on PAL systems, the tigers are just a bit more pink than orange.

wow!

I'm jealous of the vibrancy of the red color. Best I've ever seen on my NTSC monitors and TVs is just a touch better than a sort of crimson red and only by pushing saturation too high making all other colors suffer.

p.s. I'm really impressed by your recent conversions of car photographs.

I'm glad to hear it looks good on NTSC too.

That's what's so nice about the 1200XL's chroma circuit when it's working properly, you get that great saturation level at default TV/monitor settings and there is no bleeding or other colors suffering. That circuit, along with the basic SV 2.1 mod for sharpness and clarity, that the s-video picture comes close to RGB/YUV color and sharpness. That, plus the lack of scan-lines on an LDC screen just put it over the top!

I mis-understood you when I first read this post. I mis-read it as the NTSC "Cherry" hot rod .xex was the best red you've seen on your NTSC TV.

In proper response; The better the source video...turning up the saturation is the same as pushing the volume way up on a cheap low-amp stereo and cheap speakers and you get all the distortion. Proper amplification and good speakers solve the issue. The chroma circuit in the 1200XL is like a pre-amp for the color saturation, but Atari screwed it up, so it has to be fixed along with the whole video circuit from stock, like on most Atari 8-bits, hence all the video hacks and now even a new video board(s).

Sorry. I didn't realize that my statements were confusing.

I meant that a dull crimson red is the best that I've witnessed on my NTSC Ataris, 800 and 800XL (currently)

I was jealous of your 1200XL's capture and the "cherry" red color demonstrated by your appropriately named Rasta conversion.

The "CherryRed Hot Rod" at least is actually red, such that it is, on my 800XL and not at all like the maroon color that appears in your emulator screenshots.

The original source was a dark cherry red, Rasta Converter made the output.png's look wine or almost plum red, but the actual screen shot I showed is much closer to the original image color.

With my monitor and scan converter set to factory defaults I see what I would call a dark cherry red, a "bing cherry" red rather than a "marachino cherry" red. Your 1200XL capture looks closer to the latter (as seen from my laptop's display). Less vibrant than say fire engine red and less say than that Italian car brand's red (not to mention any names).

I'm already off topic but you have me intrigued about the possibility of seeing a subjectively better red on my 800's with one of the new A8 video upgrades.

Something to think about...

Thanks for the information (and these picture conversions).

Here is one for PAL only for now, both dithered and non-dithered versions. This is one that I have attempted many times over the past months, these are the first I think barely make the grade. I just had to get it out and be done with it. I've done several Iron Maiden conversions, but I'm a bigger fan of the art than the music.

Iron Maiden Trooper. PAL 62 colors, dithered 55 colors.

More... 2 pics I drew on the ST did convert reasonably well down to 8-bit - of the Dunedin Railway Station and of the Robbie Burns in front of St Pauls Cathedral in the Octagon.

A volleyball clip-art pic I found somewhere - and an Amiga Deluxe Paint II example pic of a brunette.

Harvey.

looking at the pics got a simple idea - rasta rasta converter - a batch starting several rastas with different dithering and other settings at once. on multi core processors it could generate pics in parallel and after some time one could choose the best and kill the rest.

Inspired by The Trooper above:

attachicon.gifpiece_of_mind.png

40 colours

I assume a PAL palette was used but the conversion looks more menacing in NTSC mode.

Scariest thing to appear on my A8 since the Rescue on Fractalus incident

[edit]

Oops! I forgot my colors in Altirra are tweaked in an attempt to bring the visuals more in line with my scan converter's and VGA monitor's default settings

I assume my hardware is pretty far off of what it should be but this is somewhat like I see it.

Sorry but it's a screenshot. I don't have a working camera.

Inspired by the Iron Maiden head shot above, I thought I'd do a head shot of my own.

Boba Fett. NTSC, NTSC non-dithered, 72 colors. Dithered 81 colors. PAL, non-dithered 63 colors. Dithered 60 colors.

Yeah, it looks a bit more ghoulish with the NTSC palette :)

Here's another one from a favorite band:

attachicon.gifivop-pal-misplaced_childhood.png

I cut it out with The Gimp from the original album cover. The whole cover did not fare well :)

37 colours, PAL.

Not many folks these days remember Marillion. :)

Thunderbird 2. NTSC 80 colors. PAL 67 colors. This one seems very weird to me, the image on the right is the PAL picture, and it looks like it has the most colors!

Thunderbird 1, 32 colors.

Thunderbirds Are Go! 71 colors. F.A.B

Sorry NTSC guys, I'm done doubling my Rasta work load to get out NTSC conversions. Back to PAL only for me. Time for someone with an NTSC computer to step up. If someone begs, I may do these last two to finish off the series for Thunderbird crafts, Though TB5 was never done in NTSC either. But I know I'm in the minority as an American Thunderbird/Gerry Anderson fan anyway, and it shows in the ratio of PAL vs. NTSC Thunderbird image downloads. PAL owners are more familiar and bigger fans of the stuff obviously.
