Star Raiders - how to use the Galactic Chart?

You also need to DEselect the chart when warping (i.e. switch back to forward view). You can speed up the time it takes for warping by leaving the chart up longer (because it takes less time for the game to draw the chart display vs. displaying the moving starfield)...but this will increase the distance that the crosshair moves out of position in game levels other than Novice. If the crosshair is not aligned when "hyperspace" occurs, your distance to your intended targets will be greater. Too far out of alignment, and the entire chart "cel" you selected will be overshot...and you end up in some other cel.

You can also use this to your advantage if you know beforehand what lies in adjacent cels. Suppose I am attacking enemies in a cel directly below one that holds a base. By centering the warp crosshair on the upper line (rather than all 4) when hyperspace occurs, the jump destination is to that next cel holding the base. This is useful under extreme circumstances (i.e. shield being destroyed).

I'm trying to figure out how to use the Galactic Chart in Star Raiders. I press "G" to display the chart, use the joystick to select where I want to go, then press "H" to go there but I end up somewhere random. What am I doing wrong?

Make sure the computer is on and keep the crosshairs centered. ;-)
