If you had to pick one system to keep...

For whatever circumstance you are forced to pair down your retrogaming/computing collection to a single system. Which one would you keep and why?

In my household between myself and my partner we have an Atari 2600, XEGS, SNES, N64 and Dreamcast.

It pains me to say this I think I'd keep the SNES, which is her system. Graphically the more I look at it, the games still look good today. There was some sort of a sweet spot with the 16-bit systems that the prior generations and subsequent generation kinda fall short. While the 8-bit systems have their charms, in some ways graphically they fall short because the hardware lacked the power to do cool stuff graphically. Same deal with the following generation of consoles where the move the 3D didn't always look so good because the hardware lacked the power to do cool stuff graphically. I think the library is fairly strong with good variety and quality titles -- though there is certainly plenty of shovelware and bad licensed crap out there. Plus with the SNES I can cheat a little, with the Super Game Boy I get access to the Game Boy library as well -- which opens up a ton of different games.

But if I had to exclude her stuff (the SNES and N64) I'd keep the XEGS without a doubt.

I've more or less HAD to trim down my stuff when I needed to get rid of other systems (Mostly the PCE SuperGrafx, Super Famicom and Vectrex) and now have what I cannot part with. But if I could only keep one system, and Emulation wasn't an option then I'd have to keep my SEGA Mega Drive / Genesis. For me that was the summit of my gaming years and I actually preferred the system over the Super Famicom/SNES. Honestly though, I'd never get rid of my 7800/2600 Pro System and it's games. It be in "mothballs" somewhere.

Oh, man. That would be so tough. The systems with unique controls, such as the Inty and the 5200, would be hard to go to emulation with since I enjoy their uniqueness so much. But I would have to stick with the Atari 8-Bit, because it's the system I have had the longest, have the most for, and can do the most with. Through all the purges, that's the one I've kept.

Depends on the week. Right now, because of Tempest finally coming out for the Atari 5200, I'd keep the 5200. But I've been more successful tracking down homebrews and cool extras for the Vectrex, so maybe by next week I'd say keep the Vectrex and ditch the rest. I'm not sure I could choose just one. I might have to kill whoever was forcing me to make that choice if he wouldn't allow for one raster and one vector pick, haahahaa.

Probably the PS2. It has a HUGE library, and it plays the PS1 HUGE library. Together, just about every genre of console game is covered!

(1) Modern-style 1st-person shooters.

(2) Modern-style racing, in any sub-category.

(3) Classic arcade compilations (both PS1/PS2) that - in totality - are pretty extensive.

(4) A few classic console compilations (2600, INTV, Sega)

(5) Modern-style fighting (Tekken, Soul Calibur, Virtua Fighter)

(6) Fun light-gun games (Namco stuff, PS1 stuff)

(7) RPGs

"If stranded on a desert island," I think it covers as many genres as anything else, and there are a LOT of good games.

Either that, or I would pick the system that came in the biggest box so I could live in it, because that is obviously the situation I would be in.

If all the water disappeared from the Earth, which umbrella would you bring with you?

Colecovision and Sega Master System is what I grew up playing and are dear to my heart.

In a similar vein to the SNES/Gameboy, PS2/PS1 backwards compatibility, I would go out and buy a Genesis. Then I would buy the adapter thing that allows me to play SMS games.

I'd loose the Coleco, but I'd still have the Master System and would have access to the awesome Genesis library to compensate.
