MESS and Mac OS X

Hello all! This is my first official "new" topic for me. I know the title doesn't sound TI related but I promise you it is!

I'm trying to find the latest MESS binary for Mac OS X. In my particular case, Snow Leppard (10.6 - 32bit).

Currently I use Parallels (virtualization) for all of my TI emulation. However, MESS is extremely sluggish and difficult to use under Windows (which is already virtualized in my case) and I'd like to be able to natively run MESS on the Mac so I can eliminate the extra overhead of virtualization.

My problem is I need Xcode Developers package install on my Mac. Last time I tried installing it, it corrupted my system and I had to re-install my Mac from scratch and I'd kinda like to avoid that again.

So, is there anyone out there using a Mac with developers code installed, that they could build a binary for me?

I'd be very very happy if so!

Thanks in advance,

I have binaries for MESS on my mac. I'll post them here when I'm home.

That would be great!

If I could get MESS to work under OS X, I can save two layers of emulation/virtualization (Mac -> Parallels -> Windows -> TI-Emulator), a boatload of memory, and booting up of three nested systems just to get to my TI. As it is today, I have to juggle apps so as not to run out of memory when all this is running at once. Kind of a PITA! Too bad I can't squeeze some more memory into my laptop but, alas, it's max'd and max'd is 2GB. :(

Anyhow, thanks again for your help!

Hmmm, sorry. I only have 64bit binaries, so this will probably not work...

I downloaded these from somewhere on the net though, so you should be able to find them with a google search.

Thanks for sharing TheMole (sorry don't know your name)! I appreciate your help.

I doubt this will work on my system. But I'm downloading it anyway!

I've done a lot of searches online but I can never find any binaries that are recent. At least recent enough to be able to work with the new file structures that have been implemented. But, I haven't searched in a couple months so I'll try some more searches.

If nothing else I may try installing xcode on my system and take another chance. I better make sure TimeMachine is up to date.

If anyone else happens to have the binaries for 32 bit, I'd still be interested in the latest version. I'm limited to Snow Leopard 32-bit unfortunately.

Thanks again!

Were you able to get up and operational, Click?

Yes, I was finally able to get MESS running natively on the Mac. Took about a year but it's working for the most part. I just don't use it much because the keyboard handling is next to impossible to deal with. Specifically under the Geneve, can't get CAPS lock to work right, getting the special control buttons to work can all be very challenging and the Geneve seems to lock up quite often so I've pretty much given up using it for anything reliable.

I really do like it and I think it's the best out there for hardware features but the keyboard kills any kind of productivity I gain with emulation.

I've also been using V9T9 now that it's Java based. Although, the latest version won't run on my system for some reason. Working with author on it though.

I also switched up my Macbook Pro to a slightly newer one that supports 64bit. So that sorta solved my MESS problem but I think that's what nixed my V9T9 from working. LOL

My overall goal was to have a duplicate emulation system as my real system, that was I can get the advantages of programming on emulation and eventually test on real hardware. But, it's not quite there yet (at least for me).

Cheers!

Dano,

please remember to report any issues with MESS to me so that something can be done about it.

Concerning Caps Lock you should redefine another key to become Caps Lock (of course, one that you don't usually need). There is a known issue with the PC Caps Lock key in the MAME core keyboard handling which lets it get out of sync with the emulation; maybe this also applies for the Mac. As this is in the MAME core I did not yet have a deeper look, but I'll put that on my todo list.

I do not have any reports about lock-ups in the Geneve emulation at this time, so also here, please give me some details, best would be a reproducible test. In recent times I did some productive work on the Geneve emulation without any issues of that kind.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I haven't bothered you with the problems because I haven't been able to commit time to actually pursue and followup and I hate to bitch about something unless I'm ready to do something about it. Although, it hasn't prevented me from complaining when I've reached my frustration limit.

I feel like it's not fair for me to hit you up when I'm not able to put some effort in from my side (for no other reason than lack of time). I'd like to be part of the solution rather than the problem.

So, those most recent observations are my latest road bumps. I'll try to get more info when I can get some time to really do testing and give you some feedback.

As far as re-assigning the keys go, I tried to do that but it seems like it totally ignores my changes. If I remember right, the same changes did work on the PC side but not on the Mac. I often test on the PC first to get it working functionally, then I make those changes to my Mac and hope that it will work over there too. Granted the keyboard assignment is slightly different for the Mac but same process.

As far as the lock-ups go, it just freezes randomly. The screen will change from White on Blue (in MDOS) and just before it locks up, the screen color changes to dark blue. No warning, nothing and if I made any config changes (via the GUI) during that session, they're gone too.

Unfortunately, that's all I've done for trouble-shooting. :-/

Just a wild guess, but your description of the lockup reminds me of the Pause feature which you get when you press P while in partial keyboard mode. I just mention that because it once happened to me that I thought there was a lockup, but it was just paused as I had forgotten to switch back to full keyboard mode.

Hmm, ok. I'll have to double check that I'm not inadvertently doing that as it might be related to the key mapping problem since I can't seem to re-map the menu key. And since I can't remap that I have to constantly fiddle with switching between keyboard emulation modes.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.
