+Philsan
Very nice SID emulation: http://atariki.krap.pl/index.php/SID_Player Could someone please explain how Pokey emulates SID?
MaPa
How? EASILY! Because Pokey is superior to SID (sorry can't resist)
Rybags
CPU grunt is the key. The way SID works is that phase accumulators determine what part of a waveform is to be played by each voice. Essentially the selected frequency (16 bits) is added to the accumulator (24 bits?) each cycle. Then some bits from the middle determine what amplitude should be output for that voice. Sawtooth waveform, simple case of outputting that amplitude. Square/pulse waveform, a comparison is done with the pulsewidth to determine if max or min amplitude is output. Triangle, the msb determines if the remainder of the bits should be output or if the inverse is output. This can be emulated in software fairly well. Of course filters are an entire different matter and can't be emulated by slow old machines. The effective sample frequency IIRC is something like 8 KHz. Not SID quality for sure but sufficient to reproduce many sounds with reasonable accuracy. SID emulation has been done in software on various older machines, AFAIK they all use a similar method to do it.
Fres
I'm a lifelong A8 user, and I've never owned any c= machines, but I am impressed by the SID every time I hear it (live).
sack-c0s
I'm actually really impressed with the simplicity of how they made it work with the accumulator stuff
