Retrospect
The voice on this defect detector sounds like our 52xx chips to me. Anyone concur? https://youtu.be/OIgXsSIzrWQ?t=1m22s Certainly sounds like it. I wonder, when something goes wrong, does it go "UHOH!"
Omega-TI
Day off... it's pretty but I'm not going anywhere soon. So, a little TI, a little AtariAge and a whole lot of cleaning up the den.
digdugnate
we got lucky where we were in the 'freeze line'- just a touch of ice but nothing impactful. Winter has sure worn out its welcome imo.

Omega-TI
I built this last weekend https://photos.app.goo.gl/lrQzYB51uZ0yuoxO2 I'd like something like that just for 'wall art', not for any practical reason. $150.00 is a little steep for what I'd use it for. I'll have to look around and see if anyone just sells a faceplate with just a few blinking LED's 'for looks'.

digdugnate
so here was my day yesterday. my wife and i have had a pretty crappy week (sickness in the house, among other things) so I took her out to lunch. on the way home, tho, a truck stopped suddenly in front of us with no brake lights or turn signal- the roads were wet, too. we were doing 60, but i was what i figured to be about 7-8 seconds-ish behind. it was either slide into the truck or down an embankment to a shallow creek, so i chose the embankment. the truck didn't stick around to see if we were ok. all things considered, we got off reallllly lucky; the airbags didn't deploy, i didn't really jack anything up on the car aside from crunching the crap out of the bottom front bumper and a bunch of damage from brush on my driver side. digdugnate
we're just really sore today, and probably be more so when i get my bill from the body shop on how much to repair the damage cars are just things but i'd just as soon we hang around a bit. my deductible is pretty high with my insurance, so i'll see what they say on monday; fortunately we know the body shop that Progressive is recommending in town so there will be some wiggle room while we work out the numbers. +OLD CS1
Glad you are both okay, and I hope Progressive treats you better than me. On another note, does anyone here do any home brewing of the alcoholic kind? I need one golden bottle cap. I can buy them 100 at-a-time, but I only need one. Can anyone here help a brother out??

+Vorticon
I built this last weekend https://photos.app.goo.gl/lrQzYB51uZ0yuoxO2 Nice! I have the PiDP-8 from the same builder I believe. I have it running Seti@home in the background 24/7 I also have the Briel Computer Altair 8800 micro kit which I still have to put together along with the micro-KIM, the Apple I replica and the SWTPC Superboard III kits. I love these replica computers which give you a nearly full hands on experience along with the convenience of modern interfaces and components. Unfortunately Briel Computers seems to be out of business currently which is a shame. If anyone is interested in a full size replica of the Altair, then check this site: http://altairclone.com/details.htm . At $600 it's certainly not cheap, but you really cannot tell the difference from the real thing from an aesthetics or functionality standpoint.

+mizapf
It seems as if now it's our turn in Europe with those cold temperatures: They've announced temperatures below -20°C (=-4°F) this night. On the Zugspitze (Germany's highest mountain, 2962 m), a record low temp of -30.5°C (=-22.9°F) was measured yesterday. They are now getting concerned about homeless people; as I heard, in Essen they may give their dogs for free to animal shelters during the cold nights so that they may use accomodations that do not allow animals.

I was not aware Germany had a homeless population, at least not an involuntary one...
+mizapf
Statistics say that in Germany in 2017, - 52000 people were homeless without any accomodation, sleeping outside - 390000 people were virtually homeless (having a chance to find temporary shelter at friends or relatives or in public shelters) - 420000 people were approved refugees without a permanent accomodation (current population: 82.5 mill.) I am frankly surprised... My son is planning on moving to Germany for his Master's degree and he had never mentioned that in his numerous past visits... I also have an uncle in Frankfurt since 1969 (an antique dealer). I really thought Germany had a pretty solid social services program... +mizapf
It largely depends on who you call "homeless", as you see. By relative numbers, only 0.06% are "living on the streets". It is pretty well understandable that you don't see them at first sight, but in particular in larger cities, you soon learn under which bridges to look for them. The second category are people in need of housing, but you typically don't see them outside. The third category has increased dramatically in the last years, since we have to take care of a lot of refugees. As long as they do not have a permanent address, they live in camps. I'm not sure whether I have actually recognized any one of them by now - mind that they don't carry a sign. Luckily, I should say (that they don't have that sign, to be precise ... ooh, difficult).
