mimo
a glaring omission in my opinion. great game on the 8 bit range, but could probably be more arcade accurate on the 7800¿¡

Jaynz
*chuckles* Suddenly I'm feeling for poor PMP about his game catalog. But I agree, Qix would be a good addition to the 7800's line-up. Is there source available for a different version (like the 5200) so the logic can be looked at?
The Usotsuki
Not that I'm aware of. Though, apparently there was an 800 or 5200 port, a NES port and an Apple //e port which are all 6502. The 800 or 5200 version, whichever it was, seems to be more arcade accurate, but the NES and Apple //e versions are related to each other. adam242
The 800 and the 5200 initially had their own different versions and 5200 Qix was later ported to the 8-bits. I've never played the arcade version, so I can't speak to which is more faithful. The 8-bit version has a higher resolution playfield (ANTIC E vs ANTIC D) while the 5200 version has a more colorful Qix. I like the sound effects of the 8-bit version better, but that's just opinion. Either way, it'd be a cool title to have on the 7800.

thursday83
I love Qix. I think it's one of the 5200's top titles. A 7800 version would be welcomed, for sure I think. It'd be nice to make it a sequel of sorts, perhaps with a goal, or some sort of bonus levels or bosses or both.....it'd be a neat idea.
8th lutz
I am a fan of Qix on the Nes, Gameboy,Lynx and the arcade version. I can't speak on the 5200 version since I never played any 5200 games. I also can't talk about the Atari 8 bit version of Qix either since I never owned any 8 bit Atari computers although I do I remember seeing the XEGS at Toys"R"US back in the late 1980's. I think a 7800 version of Qix would a nice addition to the Atari 7800 Library, but I rather see other Taito games on the 7800 first. The Taito games I rather see on the Atari 7800 before Qix is Elevator Action, Bubble Bobble, Space Invaders part II, and Return of Invaders. There are sequels to Qix in the arcade called Super Qix and Volfied. Both games are in Taito Legends compilation for the PC, Playstation 2 and Xbox. Volifed also is known as Ultimate Qix on the Sega Genesis. Edited November 25, 2013 by 8th lutz

thursday83
Lutz - thanks! Did not know that. Will perhaps seek out a copy of that for the PS2.
Jaynz
I think the difference for supporting Qix is that it's a fairly unique title, whilst most games discussed for porting are in genres the 7800 already has SOMETHING of. For instance, I would love to see Gorf and Phoenix made, personally, but we already have a few vertical shooters under the belt. I can't think of ANY game that's 'like Qix' that's already on the 7800.

ZylonBane
QIX might not even be possible on the 7800 without extra RAM in the cart, due to the entire playfield being a dynamic bitmap. This was no problem for the 5200 since it had 16K to play with, but the 7800's piddling 4K? It'd be a challenge.

What you said is true on the regular Atari 7800 based on what Kenfused mentioned years ago on Qix for the Atari 7800. This is where the Atari 7800 XM comes in. The Atari 7800 XM has 128k of ram. ZylonBane
The 7800 XM isn't a 7800, therefore it is irrelevant and of no interest to true classic console gamers. If I wanted to play a not-7800 version of Qix, I'd just fire up the original in MAME.
Blue Azure
Try this simple program. 01 Buy a 5200 to 7800 hardware adapter (if you can find one) 02 Plug in 5200 QIX Cart 03 Power on the 7800 and enjoy the game that belongs *only* on the 5200 04 GOTO 01 The only thing we need to do with QIX is to QIX it off the 7800 line-up. kenfused
I think once I worked out it should be possible to get a playfield on the 7800 similar in size to the 5200 version in just the base RAM, but it would be tight and limiting. If I wanted to play a not-7800 version of Qix, I'd just fire up the original in MAME. Very well-said. I wouldn't mind a true 7800 version (plays on any 7800) version of Qix, or just about *any* game. If we're going to move past that specification, then I'd just as soon play the real deal like you said. Concurrently, I enjoy the "lesser" versions as well, playing the 400/800 version and the 5200 version (thankfully converted to 400/800). I would like to expect more out of the XM than Qix, but that could just be me.

How come nobody ever brings up the Lynx as a platform to borrow source code from in order to create homebrew derived ports over to systems such as the 7800 and 5200/A8? Sure, we're talking about a 16Mhz-ish 6502 and custom graphics chips, but the 6502 code should be solid and something worthy of borrowing should be in there. After all, it would be more "modern" code to boot. In cases such as Qix, or Paperboy, I'd think grabbing the Lynx source code would be better than, say, from the C64 or Apple // line, right? Damn…totally unrelated thought but too bad Ballblazer didn't get ported to the Lynx or Jaguar back in the day...

Hey, if we're going to suggest pinball games, I'd like to suggest a port of Starball then. Can't remember if there was an A8 version but the ST and Falcon versions were incredible. Damn it, why has multi quote become such a problem on here? What happened with Elevator Action? Did GCC lose it? I'm getting confused whether that was supposed to appear on the 5200, 7800, or both. I'd kill for a hacked version of Space Invaders that supported paddles/spinners. Same goes with Gyruss.
