What have you actually PLAYED tracker for 2014 (Season 7)

Recommended Posts

Can't remember now, but I know it's from the EU. I got it with a bunch of tapes purchased from the UK. Also the signboards in the background are different than in US.

Here are pages with some screenshots of the Melbourne House and Ocean versions. I'm guessing from your comment that it was probably the Ocean one, since that doesn't have the "English Tear" sign.

Awesome, welcome aboard! We'll count those with this week's stats. And yep, we don't care whether it's emulated or not.

Note that GBA games aren't counted in the weekly stats since we have a "pre-2000 consoles" cutoff, but you're still welcome to mention them.

Sorry, I didn't play anything this week. I've got the flu and go to bed early, and still got many things to do for other people, so gaming was an absolute non-priority for me this week.

However, yesterday, we found a huge bag with old PC games on CD-ROM's, mostly game compilations, so I may try some of these later on. The question, however, is if I actually get them to run on a modern PC since they are designed for Pentium 166's or even 486DX33's (or however they were called), running Windows 95. This, however, means that if I get them to run, they may actually be eligible for inclusion in the Top 10. We'll see. Trying them out is not on my to-do list for the near future, however. I also ceased working on the Pole Position games for now.

My times for the week:

NES:

Dragon Knife - 9 min.

PlayStation:

Krazy Ivan - 29 min.

Steel Harbinger - 136 min.

N64:

All-Star Tennis '99 - 178 min.

Beat Steel Harbinger, whose last few stages were shorter/went more quickly than I expected. After that I futzed around with Krazy Ivan, a mech game/FPS with FMV cutscenes, but lost interest when I couldn't figure out how to complete the first level.

Then, over the weekend, I started on All-Star Tennis '99, a mediocre but playable effort for the N64. After losing a couple exhibition matches, things clicked, and I won three matches against various opponents (on Easy, Normal, and Hard), by scores ranging from 6-1 to 6-4, all as real-life pro and ex-Wimbledon champ Richard Krajicek.

Next I won two tournaments on Hard: a two-round event against a field of 3 random players, and then a 3-rounder against the game's male roster (plus one female in the eighth spot). Mercifully you have the option of playing 2-game, one-set matches, which helps things move at a brisk pace. In the second tournament I never faced a marquee opponent -- somehow all the imaginary CPU players took them out -- but hey, I can only beat whoever's in front of me. For winning these, I got a brief ending screen and a credit scroll.

After that I tried Bomb Tennis mode, a silly novelty in which a bomb is planted on the court wherever and whenever the ball lands. Since Michael Chang is on the game's cover, I figured he's probably meant to be the strongest player, so I took him on. After a few failures, I ultimately won a match 6-4 (on Hard). No credit scroll for that, alas, but it's oddly satisfying to blow up Chang -- not to mention how hilariously incongruous it is when the game's umpire shouts "Quiet, please!" while bombs are exploding on the court.

All these matches were played on a grass court in London -- fake Wimbledon, basically -- but I'll surely be playing in other venues in the mode I haven't yet conquered, World Tour. I tried a few times to win the opening match, still playing on Hard, but I was getting waxed by a player I was beating easily before. Not sure whether Bomb Tennis messed me up, or World Tour takes its difficulty setting more seriously than the other modes.

-----

As for ineligible games, my fiancée and I finally beat Shredder on Hard in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Normally that'd be the end of it, but there's an extra battle against Shredder that can only be unlocked by completing the game four times, i.e. once for each turtle (the second turtle in 2P mode doesn't count). I was Donatello on our Easy run, Michelangelo on Normal, and Leonardo on Hard, so I thought I'd take on Hard solo as Raphael and unlock that extra battle...

...but since the number of enemies in 1P mode is unchanged, it's a real slog, especially on Hard: each level takes around an hour, and there are six total plus three bonus mini-levels. And Raphael's attacks have little range, so it's easy to get swamped. Sigh.

(Now, completing the next-to-last level with all four turtles will unlock a special weapon that'll make things easier, and I'll use it if I continue to Level 6 in 1P mode -- but I'm actually glad we beat the game without it first.)

In case you noticed that I didn't post last week - that was because my son was born last sunday. :-D :-D :-D

Since then, I was a tad busy, as you can imagine. The list of gameplay is the total of two weeks: the majority from the week before his birth, and a little bit from last week, while mother and kid were still in the hospital. He's a week old now and so far seems to be quite a relaxed child and he's - of course - supercute.

Forgot to take notes this week. =/

Been a slow week, a little C64, a little PSX, mostly A2600 (Space Invaders, Q'Bert (what a great port, even i can beat a couple levels on B setting), Asteroids) and various MAME games and i've spent some time on various shooters for the X68K..

.. And Frogger for various systems. Still sucks, still wanna rule. :)

Tandy 1000-

Gauntlet- 20min (not a great port, A8 and C64 vastly superior- rate of fire is too slow and collision detection is also very slow: enemies die 0.5 seconds after hit, but can still hit you until then)

Tetris- 15min

As I don't know if I'll have any time for gaming on Sunday, I post my stats already. This week our retrogaming collective were invited to the museum to spice up the opening day of their new exhibition on Swedish made computer and video games. While we brought the Real Stuff , the permanent exhibition is run in emulated environments, e.g. the Fairchild Channel F is emulated through MAME on a Raspberry Pi.

Amiga:
Pinball Dreams - Nightmare - 4 min.
This was in an emulated environment at the museum, and I'm not even sure it was an Amiga emulator - might've been the PC DOS version too but as it was presented as being an Amiga, I'll count it towards the Amiga as well.
C64:
Shredz 64 - 38 min.
Space Action - 4 min.
The museum had marketed the exhibition with an image of an excited young woman playing Guitar Hero, but as the exhibition itself lacked that, I brought a C64 with the PSX64 interface and Shredz 64 by Synthetic Dreams. It doesn't exactly behave like how people once were used to with GH, but at least some stopped by to have a try.
Creativision:
Auto Chase - 2 min.
Crazy Chicky - 2 min.
Locomotive - 3 min.
Planet Defender - 5 min.
Police Jump - 3 min.
All those were played on my Laser 2001.
NES/Famicom:
Super Mario Bros 3 - 1 min.
Intellivision:
Burgertime - 5 min.
Triple Action - 4 min.
Megadrive / Genesis:
Dragon Fury - 2 min.
SNES:
Cool Spot - 14 min.
Nigel Mansell's World Championship - 12 min.
These games were played at home, as opposed to the mostly short play times above.
VIC-20:
Anirog Skramble - 13 min.
Firebird Snakebite - 4 min.
Punchy - 9 min.
Ultima: Escape from Mount Drash - 9 min.
All present on the Mega-Cart. For those owning one of those, Mount Drash is found as an Easter Egg on the F2 (Extras menu) and U for Ultima. Actually I found it better than I remember from when I tried it a few years ago, but it appears the programmer spent more effort to get a lot of tunes and jingles play on interrupt in the background than the actual gameplay. Some sites refer to the fact that the games requires at least 8K memory expansion would have hampered its sales, but given how relatively common memory expansions were on the VIC-20 and how many nice shoot'em-ups and other games were sold, I doubt that was what prevented Drash from being a blockbuster. Sword of Fargoal from Epyx comes to my mind, a dungeon crawler requiring 16K expansion, far more common and far more playable than Escape from Mount Drash is.
Oh yes, for thegoldenband's sake: I previously posted some minutes on Snakebite, which should count as Firebird Snakebite. I realized some games with the same name exist, e.g. multiple Snakebite/Snakebyte's, multiple Skramble/Scramble's and so on.
Videopac G7000 / Odyssey^2:
Frogger - 6 min.
We initially planned to put an Atari 2600jr at the museum, but it had some kind of issue with the power supply, either the supply itself or internally so after a while it would dim and die. Thus we replaced it with a G7000, much to all Atari fans despair. :-D

MY WEEK - MAY 19th-25th

Atari 2600 - Malagai - 147 minutes (for HighScore.com)

Atari 2600 - Thrust - 1 minute (for 2014 Harmony Games)

Atari 7800 - Pac-Man Collection - 165 minutes (for HighScore.com in several sessions)

Malagai is one of mega-rare titles for the Atari 2600. The objective is to capture a Malagai in accordance to the symbols displayed above the maze, escape from the Malagai enemy and open the airlocks. There are 3 mazes - red, green and blue in sequence. Each time you exit from the third board (Blue), you will get an extra life (Crew Member), up to a maximum of 5 in reserve, and start again with red maze. In the video which I made and presented below, you will see at 1:07:00 mark what happens if you exit from the blue maze with 5 Crew Members in reserve.

CHECK OUT THE FOLLOWING VIDEOS:

1) 2600 Malagai - Game 1-AA (Easy Variation) - 100,000 points (Rolled The Score)

2) 7800 Pac-Man Collection - Pac-Man Plus in 2 gameplays (Fast and Normal Speed)

3) 7800 Pac-Man Collection - Ms. Pac-Man Plus in 2 gameplays (Fast and Normal Speed)

My times for the week:

Intellivision:

Tower of Doom - 93 min.

Game Boy:

Mickey's Dangerous Chase - 5 min.

Ren & Stimpy: Veediots! - 2 min.

Genesis:

Sol-Deace - 1 min.

Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf - 1 min.

Sega CD:

Loadstar: The Legend of Tully Bodine - 88 min.

PlayStation:

Cool Boarders 3 - 2 min.

N64:

Aero Fighters Assault - 70 min.

All-Star Tennis '99 - 289 min.

Armorines: Project S.W.A.R.M. - 2 min.

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter - 2 min.

Beat All-Star Tennis '99, as well as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for GameCube. Thoughts on those, and Steel Harbinger from last week, here.

In Tower of Doom, I was able to complete the Catacombs/12 Levels adventure with the Waif character. My long-term project with Tower of Doom is to finish every scenario with the weak-as-a-kitten Waif, but I hadn't made any progress on it since 2012, when I beat the Tower/8 Levels adventure (I also beat the Novice adventure in 2010, I think). So, back in the saddle with that: three down, eleven to go.

Otherwise, besides trying out a few new acquisitions, I spent the rest of my gaming time on an aggravating pair of games. First, Aero Fighters Assault for N64, where getting behind enemy jets seems almost impossible, at least in the Practice/Vs. AI Pilot mode. Then, Loadstar, a typical Sega CD FMV rail shooter that has a few touches of polish, but uses a quintessentially irritating control scheme where you navigate and shoot with your targeting reticule, often forcing you to choose between shooting an enemy and making a turn. Ugh.
