BASIC Ten-Liners - Contest 2014

Bunsen

Recommended Posts

That Game, Flappy.xex

It seems not working properly.

When I loading up and it will not stop flying. On Commodore 8 bits side, it suppose to wait for the user to press the space bar and start the game. On the Atari version, it automatic start the game WITHOUT wait until pressing the space bar first and play the stage .

This is so to acquaint the player with the inevitable - the failure :]

Best,

Hehe! :)

To be honest: My game also starts immediately and it drops back to the BASIC interpreter at it's end. There simply was no room in those ten lines to wait for a trigger press ... which is of course an excuse for my laziness to implement something like that after everything else in the game worked. :D

Kind regards,

Henrik (Island2Live)

Here's mine - "Escape 10".

It's a mini, downfeatured version of my Moon Shuttle game - guide your ship through the growing asteroid field and through the gap in the force-field on the right (only to have to repeat it until end of game).

Bonus pickups - (L) for extra life

(I) gives temporary invincibility - grab this then just run over rocks and don't worry about the force-field for the remainder of the level.

Game uses some custom characters, so there's a bit of a delay each time it starts.

Esc10.zip

ESC10.TBA - TurboBasic Version

ESC10.BAS - version that runs on normal Atari Basic.

Today is the last day of the NOMAM.

The tenliners contest ended yesterday midnight. Contest was completely different to last year. Last year some people of nomam visitors coded live all the time and we got 6 entries at the end. This year all visitors were so busy to test all the fantastic programs that only one coded live, we've got 39 remote entries before the NOMAM has started, and 40 at the end of the contest.

Since most visitors haven't tested anyof the programs before the meeting, we decided to choose a very special mode for voting. First every judge (=all visitors) have chosen their favorites (3) in each category. Then we had the 16 games the visitors liked best in the category with correct line lenght and 8 games in the category with the over long lines.

Now we drawed two programs and compared them, visitors voted by show of hands which program shall come in the next round. We repeated this procedure until we had a ranking. Ok, seems to be a bit unfair... Joyas was drawn against Jump early and lost, also Flappy against Cavern 10. But it was easier for the visitors to judge the flood of entries.

The results:

Category regular lines:

1. Jump!

2. Maze

3. Dodge Racer

4. Escape 10

5. Carrera

5. Puzzler Duell

5. Count1ing Zoo

17. Jumpsheep

17. Nimx

17. Paddleship

17. Planets

17. Shmup

yay! thank you voters! making them games was the best 8-bit fun I had for years. Personally I wished for my graphical masterpiece flappy to land higher, but I fully understand that the game itself has got negative playability :)

Take care,

4. Escape 10

Thanks for the votes. TBXL version a last-minute thing - actually I think only 1 or 2 statements differ.

I'll have to get started earlier for next year's one, although I had this one practically done a month ago but left it to the last day to add the chset and put the final polish on.

I have to give thanks to Bunsen by creating this contest.

Also to my shared 5th place :)

5. Minimalist Guaton

Last but not least, to Rybags for his tips to save code.

And I also started too late programming, I have one line left for Special Characters redefinition, however it is simple atascii.

I have left the second Rybags' tip

Wow! Thanks voters! It's an honor to place first among so many great entries. Thanks to the organizers for the contest. I have loved playing the other entries and learning tricks from their source code. I'm looking forward to the ATR.

Hi!

I wish to thank first Bunsen for its work organizing this fun contest, more than a contest transformed to a 'wold cup' of turbo-basic 10-liner games :-). Writing in turbo-basic reminds me of may fun hours as a child.

Also, thanks to all other participants, the many entries encouraged me to write my second game. It is really good to see so many people motivated to write for the 8bitters.

Congratulations to the winner, Jump was a really fun game!

Thanks so much for this competition. After 30 years, this is what finally motivated me to write my first ever Atari games. I hope everybody at the gathering found time to 'properly gather' with all this 10-liner judging going on. I also hope there's another one next year, because this was a ton of fun.

It's amazing what can be done with 10-lines, but it'd be great to see some expanded versions.

3. Dodge Racer
17. Grue Killer

When my wife saw a screenshot of your game she asked "really? that's done in 10 lines? then why do YOUR games look so crappy?" ;) Ouch!

WHOW! Thank you so much!

:) :D :) :dunce: :) :lust: :) :music: :)

I've never believed I would have any chance against all the other great programs. 4th place! That's absolute great in my opinion. Even if I would not have landed on the 4th place the contest was totally fun. Again: Thank you so much to everyone.

You might be interested to know the making of my little ten-liner gave me so many ideas ... I am currently in the process of developing a full game made in assembly language for the Atari 800 line of computers from it. Stay tuned for »Atlas XL«. :)

Kind regards,

Yeah, NOMAM was fun!

- Multijoy programming without a multijoy and it worked! We played Zoo Count1ng with 8 players. (16 are possible with a Multijoy16).

I also learned some nice things from the other programs. And I thought I had packed a lot in 10 lines...

Turbo Basic XL is something!

Now I am waiting for a release of all the games on a tape :)

About 50 tapes have to be ordered. I would take one.
