Tempest
I always thought the 2600 port of Defender was pretty good, but one thing that always bothered me is that you disappear when firing. I understand this is a limitation of the system, but is it possible to fix the game so this doesn't happen or at least make it not so bad? BassGuitari
The only thing that bothers me about Defender is that it's too damn easy. I have to set the difficulty switches to A and start on Game 7 or 8 for it to be remotely challenging.
+Gemintronic
I'd have to say that the effect was intentional and probably due to some resource shuffling around. Perhaps the same object that makes the ship is also the laser? Nukey Shay would probably know what's going on much better.

Tempest
But I *like* the way the original defender looks. I know it's not what the arcade version looks like, but still it has a place in my heart.
godzillajoe
Why does the chopper in Chopper Command not have the same problem as the ship in Defender.
LS_Dracon
The beam in Chopper Command is made using playfield scrolling. That was a neat idea but hard to implement. Defender uses the same player graphics for the beam, this is why it flicker.
SIO2
Blink every time you press the fire button. Your brain will be fooled into thinking the ship didn't disappear.
raindog
Just pretend it's like the Wave Motion Gun in Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers, where it drains the ship's power while it's firing. But seriously, glad to have discovered the Defender Arcade hack. I'm sure I already had it as part of one ROM pack or another, but I don't think I've ever played it. I do love it when someone else takes the sequel to a game and makes a better version of the original out of it
