Cyrus649
I 've been debating on should I get a lynx or not... If so what are some good games to get for it that's not homebrew?
Bixler
I am loving my Game Gear and I think I'll definitely go in the direction of collecting for handhelds, because my space is pretty limited. I'm curious as well of whether I should pick up a Lynx or not. If you were going to sell someone on an Atari Lynx, what would you say?

Ninjabba
Yes, get one! Even if its only to support homebrewers The library has plenty of good titles with impressive gfx for its time to keep you occupied for a while. If you don't collect boxes, the space the device + cartridges occupies is negligible I say
Bill Loguidice
I'm of two minds on this one. While I absolutely agree that the Lynx is still a brilliant handheld (and still maintain a large collection myself), if you're new to it you're going to be jarred by the low quality of the screen. Same thing with the Game Gear, same thing with the Nomad, same thing for just about any other older handheld (Turbo Express, etc.). I'd almost argue that you're better off emulating these devices on a good modern handheld since you'll get a better overall experience. With that said, I do have a Nomad with an updated screen, and that does make all the difference. If we can eventually have reliable screen upgrades for both the Lynx and Game Gear (and the other older handhelds), I'd certainly change my stance. Regardless, if you go into it knowing that the screen is not going to compare to what we've gotten used to, definitely go for it.
+FujiSkunk
Yeah, the screens on those old color systems are a pain. Washed out, poor contrast, no single "good" viewing angle. But the Lynx library is a thing a beauty, even with almost zero third-party support. Atari did a very good job with almost all of their Atari Games arcade ports. Paperboy could have been better, but you will be hard pressed to find better versions of RoadBlasters and S.T.U.N. Runner anywhere else. The early Epyx-coded games are also fun, especially Chip's Challenge and California Games. I still cringe at some of the crashes in the BMX event. If you decide you want real hardware, but you're not interested in catching them all, go for a Lynx II, the smaller model. It's easier to hold and it has stereo audio.
Xot
Lynx library is pretty amazing. No one's mentioned yet the excellent ports of the arcade versions of Rygar and Ninja Gaiden, as well as Pac-Land, Klax, and the best portable version of Robotron 2084. I think the screen is decent enough; it obviously doesn't compare to a DS or modern smart phone but the console is playable in all but direct sunlight. My opinion, get one, you will enjoy it. But get an AC adapter - battery life is pretty wretched.
+save2600
Decent games, but could never get past the blurry washed-out screen myself unfortunately.
108 Stars
I'm very different in that regard. I played the Lynx for the first time in my life in... 2009? And the screen doesn't bother me at all. Sure, a new one would be better, but I recently got a DS Phat and I must say... honestly, it is better, but it's not worlds apart in my book. The first handheld where I really see a major difference is the PSP. Also, while the screen is outdated, there are differences between models. I have heard often that people who have multiple Lynx units have very different screen qualities. And if you are fine playing Game Gear, then go for it! Every Lynx screen is better than a GG screen (and I'm a fan of the GG as well). The Lynx is great for 80ies style arcade action. From golden age classics like Robotron and Ms.Pac-Man, Paperboy and Rampage to games with impressive scaling effects, like the Afterburer clone Blue Thunder or the futuristic racer STUN Runner. The Lynx offers a library of games you mostly don't find anywhere else.
Bixler
Dang, looks like I have to pick one up now. What are the major differences between the Model 1 and 2? Both look comfortable to hold for my monster hands (another reason why I'm a fan of the Game Gear). Should I know anything about mods/replacements that should be done, like capacitor replacements (the GG is notorious for crapping out unless you replace them)? And yes, I am perfectly content with the Game Gear screen. Edited June 11, 2014 by Bixler
108 Stars
I think overall the Lynx 2 is the better choice. You can plug in cartridges on the back, just like with other handhelds. With the model 1, there is a lid on the side that you can open and put your cart in.Not a problem in general, but homebrews and some late official releases from Telegames have fat PCBs with EOM chips on them that will have issues fitting in the slot of the Lynx 1. Capacitors don't seem to be a problem with either model. The Lynx 1 is also made with colorless, greyish plastic and just painted black. So when it has been used a lot the paint wears of, making it look a bit ugly. The Lynx 2 is real dark plastic. But the Lynx 1 is a bit bigger and heavier, so for murder it is better suited. You can crack anyone's skull open with it. Edited June 11, 2014 by 108 Stars
Bixler
Thanks for the help! Time to start searching for a Model 2 in like-new/near-mint condition. May be a tough find but I'm preparing for the hunt!
108 Stars
Good luck! Will probably be easier than getting a good model 1 though. In 2010 you could still get old stock of brand new Lynx 2 units pretty cheap, but sadly nothing retro is cheap anymore. Also, if you decide you want to mod your screen after all, there is a Lynx screen replacement in the works, for model 2 only. This is another advantage. Rhomaios
What does the Lynx offer by way of exclusives or superior ports? I got my first Lynx game in yesterday (Crystal Mines II) and so I think I'm going to buy a Lynx, but I'm not 100% sold.
108 Stars
Crytal Mines II is one for sure. Chip's Challenge is another favorite Todd's Adventure in Slime World, better than the later PCE and MD ports Rygar, only console version of the arcade game outside Japan STUN Runner, fast 3D racing game in futuristic look, only console port of the arcade. Switchblade II, nice action platformer only found on Lynx and Amiga Xybots, only console port of the arcade game Just of the top of my head, and games I really like. There's more, mainly because the big publishers shied away from the Lynx, so usually the games you find there are games you don't find anywhere else. Atari was desperate enough to take developers that did not stand a chance against the big guys developing for Nintendo and Sega, resulting in many exclusive games with no big names, or lesser known arcade ports.
Bill Loguidice
Besides the ones mentioned, APB is superbly done. Gauntlet: The Third Encounter is missing a certain something to put it over the top for me in terms of being a great game, but it's definitely an interesting unofficial entry in the Gauntlet series.

Bixler
Sorry to tag onto your topic, Cyrus649, but I figured I would post here instead of making a new thread. I have heard that Best Electronics is a reputable business for Atari products. Should I pick up their reconditioned Lynx II from there? Here's the link: http://www.best-electronics-ca.com/lynx.htm#Hand%20Held Why is it cheaper than the Model I? It looks like it comes with three accessories, including a power adapter, yet it's only $79. Hmm.

doctorclu
The was and is a amazing system. I think in many ways technically and some of the games it truly did eat Gameboy's lunch. But then Gameboy had Tetris, and that game was freaking awesome. I think the Lynx is actually one of the best Atari system considering the quality of the game and the releases with the graphics level.
