The Game Gear is an 8-bit handheld console with a color screen released by Sega in 1990 (JP) and 1991 (US). It was to rival the popular game boy but was outsold due to crap games, crap battery life, and crap blur on the screen. Discontinued in 1997, the handheld's games live on through Nintendo's Virtual Console offerings.

There's your recap. I'll take $70.00

I do them on occasion for a small cost, usually enough to cover costs and postage and a little time, last one I did was a trade for some xbox games heh

I also have a custom LED mod that I have been him hawing about getting some PCB's made up (instead of making them by hand) that uses 12 small surface mount LED's down the middle of the reflector to cancel out the typical "cones of light"

looks perfect on my older game gear

but on another member's rev 5 game gear you could see little spots of light where the led's were, guess newer gears have thinner plastic on the back of the screen

I've done a couple. The cap kit I get are from Console5 they about $7 a kit plus shipping. It does take a while, desolder and pop out the old caps, trim excess lead on new caps, position them and solder it in, check under magnifying glass to be sure it is correctly soldered in, then test the system after it's all done.

  • 3 weeks later...

Uniserver (Charles) has recapped my old Macintosh Powerbook and a few other things, he's very good. I'm about to send him my buddy's Game Gear. He charges $60 for a GG recap plus return shipping.

He says it's a "pain in the ass" tho recap Game Gears. I look at it like this...

- Disassemble the unit

- Remove old caps

- Clean off any electrolyte crap (if applicable)

- Check for any other issues

- Install caps, video and audio

- Clean up inside of unit

- Reassemble and test

It's a little pricy considering he charged me less than half that to recap my PowerBook display... but it is what it is.

Another plus is he's reliable... and doesn't go MIA or decide to just quit doing it like some people who offer or used to offer services. ;)

Should read WOULD NOT hesitate

As demand has gone up he has definitely raised his prices.

Try uniserver, http://www.maccaps.com/MacCaps/Repair_Service.html

I have personally met him and used his service and would hesitate to recommend him.

I don't know if he does game gear specifically, but he does just about everything related to caps.
