Intellipacks

Recommended Posts

After listening to the Beauty & The Beast episode of Intellivisionaries I was reminded of those free Intellipacks you could download. I had them on my PC years ago but now I'm running an iMac I bought last year. I downloaded the mac versions but when I double-click on the files (.hqx) all it does is make a copy with the extension .cpgx.

Anyone have any idea how I can get these to run on my mac?

thanks

Sounds like those are old StuffIt files. See if you can find StuffIt. TBH, I can't recall if back then they supported OS X or if it was an x86 emulator or still PPC. It was quite awhile ago.

Edit: Yikes! Those are from 1997. I think that predates Apple's transition to Intel CPUs, meaning that the emulator was built for PPC and may not run on the last few releases Mac OS X. IIRC they dropped PPC emulation as a 'built-in' feature awhile back. I can't recall if there's still a way to get it.

Edit II: This link *might* help... It's not too old yet: http://www.chriswrites.com/how-to-run-powerpc-apps-on-mac-os-x-lion/

Then again, at that point, you may as well run Windows in a virtual machine instead.

Well, that was fun. ;) I found a webpage to that uses a Perl script to convert the old binhex 4.0 format to a .sit file, then some guy named a a with the email address a@a.com got a copy of StuffIt. He extracted the .sit and lo and behold, sadly, the executable is indeed a PPC application. (At least for Volume 1 -- expect the same for all three.) I didn't take it any further than that.

When we've mentioned those on the show, my intent was always to let people know that this is a way to get the rom image legally. I wouldn't want to try to get the bundled emulator running.

This was the whole reason I sought out the Intellivision Lives and Rocks CDs. I wanted the official released versions for my CC3.
