I don't own an Ouya, but you could check this out: http://ouyaforum.com/showthread.php?10951-Atari-7800-emulator

Hopefully that works for you.

Also check out the post at the bottom of this page. It gives info about using a USB-based controller on Ouya that's been rooted: https://forums.ouya.tv/discussion/comment/24697/#Comment_24697

From what I see in that post, the USB/BT Joystick Center app has been put to good use by the Ouya owner with a good description of how it's done on this blog: http://saesnotes.blogspot.com

For those of you who didn't want to deal with the hassle of modifying an Atari Flashback mini-7800 controller so it'd work with the Android emulator, I just found out that the mini-7800 joystick can directly work with this: http://www.amazon.com/SUPER-NES-FAMICOM-MEGADRIVE-Controller-Adapter/dp/B00HZWINQY

Now to get it working on Android you just have to add on an OTG cable (USB to micro-USB) to the controller connected to the new USB adapter... and hopefully it's going to be configurable using the BT/USB Joystick Center app.

The Amazon reviewers are giving the adapter low scores because db-9 port on the adapter doesn't work with a Genesis/Megadrive controller. That port is for a Famicon clone controller (ie. mini-7800 controller), so I'm thinking it's not such a low-scoring product after all :) It's also nice that it'll get your SNES controllers working, too.

I figured out it was a Famicon controller port after reading info on another one of Mayflash's controller adapters here: https://satoshimatrix.wordpress.com/2010/04/25/160/

Hey everyone. I replaced the prosystem.dat file but the pokey sounds still do not work. I tried that on my Shield tablet. I will try it on my phone and see if I can get a different result.

Update: Doesn't work on the phone either. Bummer.

Just download the binary .apk version. Then extract and install. It isn't in the Play Store. It installed easily on my HTC One and Nvidia Shield tablet.

Will this run on Ouya?

Okay, I am back... it looks like I was wrong about the 9 pin port on the Amazon Mayflash controller adapter being compatible with Famicon clone controllers like the Flashback mini-7800 controller. Got the Mayflash adapter in the mail from Amazon and tried it out over the weekend. The 9 pin port only works with the proprietary NES-controller connecting cable it comes packaged with. Also- I cannot get this adapter working in the Android Atari 7800 emulator when it's connected to my Android with an OTG cable due to the BT/USB Joystick Center App not having compatibilty. (It seems to not be able to set up a driver for the joystick directionals- even with a SNES controller connected.)

Looks like this adapter for NES and SNES controllers is only designed to be recognized on a PC with Windows or a PS3.

Long story short- you have to make your own famicon-clone db-9 to NES plug adapter if you want to have Android 7800 game compatibility with the Flashback mini-7800 controller. As stated before, you also need a Tomee NES to USB controller adapter and an OTG cable...

I'd still like to get it to work with my Nexus Player or Fire TV game controllers. If anybody knows how to do that, let me know.

I was able to make it work on the Shield tablet with controller by using the mapping tool for the Shield controller. Do those systems have a similar tool?

I don't think the Nexus Player has a mapping tool compatible with its version of Android OS. And it's not a tablet, it's a set-top box media player.

Just want to share my video which contains info on making the famicon-clone db-9 to NES plug adapter (which you would plug into your Android using the Tomee NES controller to USB adapter & an OTG cable I had formerly mentioned). If you want to have Android 7800 emulator game compatibility with the Flashback mini-7800 controller you can follow the pinout that is shown at 21:51 in the video:
