HSC11 Round 19: "R" Rocket Games

Recommended Posts

Despite the intervention of Mrs McKong suprisingly Rocket Games won the poll so here we go on a journey into the unknown and round up a few lesser known Rocket Games

Downloads:

Rocket Repairman

holy space suits! Atarimania has cursory Info I'll make this up: you are the Rocket Repairman, looks like the rocket has been dismembered and stored in the underground space cavern so fly around and collect the pieces and return them one at a time to the launch pad (pink line to you). You only get one suit but get extra air for returning each piece. Touching the walls or baddies damages your space suit you can shoot the various baddies including a giant space phallus :-D

Rocket Man

"I remember him when he was only Rocket Boy" (that was 2 players), looks fun. Gury has some screenshots here. I'll make this up too: After being demoted from Rocket Repair Man you are now charged with collecing space balls and other rocket parts plus some space letters (not space) after that you fly around aimlessly unless you can figure out what to do as I can't :? Looks nice and you can walk on the ground as long as you take giant steps :music:OK: you can walk on the platforms too which is nice as the l/r movement is a bit twitchy. Collect all the balls, get a fuel if you are running low. All you have to do on each level is collect 5 letters and if you form the secret word, clue it's ATARI! you get a bonus. Collect letters as soon as you can in any order and do the screens as waiting around for the letters to change can take a long while. You get an energy bonus for not using the extra fuel.

Rocket Rescue

we'll take another look at Jan Johnson's interesting Lunar Lander style game. Post how many guys you saved/rescued. Info (play the latest version 1.5) - looks like his web site is not available, have sent him a message. Some discussion here. You need to get to and land on the base (shown in screenshot) then return to the start - hint: collect the extra fuel on the way back! I think there are 4 levels to beat. Leave the disk/ATR in when playing. Fire to thrust up, left/right to move. On the first stage just get to the top of the screen - for each thing you destroy you get a man to rescue for the stage "Total". Then it's off to find the landing pad. If you crash make sure you go back to the pad to get some more guys before heading back (the dots under the fuel gauge show you have company).

"I'm not sure where the instructions is at the moment, but the game is straight forward i guess. Rescue the lost astronauts, pick up fuel if you need it and get back to reach the circle to teleport home again, and dont land to hard, might crash you rocket.."

Probably a good thing this is a short round but you guys voted for the poll's stocking filler option ;) These games are a lot more relaxing than the intense DesQuasiHunchModoBellBack round :-o

I've played the games and added some detail to the first post

Rocket Repair Man 4,953 not a bad game

Rocket Man 3,800 might be ok?

Rocket Rescue Total 9, Saved 5 probably the best game though I think level 3 has a tough section which might be too tough!

@roadrunner getting there... with the music, but can you top that one ;)

We'll count level reached first for the tables

Rocket man 8100

8000

I see I'm not the only one to figure out what to do! I'll add some instructions to the first post. I knew this had to be a reasonable game ;)

Rocket Rescue Slaughter Total 12 Saved 4 [oopsy] :-D

Rocket Rescue Total 17 Saved 11 Space Rookie (Lv4)

screenshot shows the tricky alien but I managed it (and the even trickier fuel collect) though only saved 1 guy! On another go I wasted all the dudes and got a "Start Evacuation" message :D Remember to get the fuels on the way back as the next level continues with the same tank - turn around before collecting them if appropriate too :) I found thrusting to a 'Smoke on the Water' rhythm worked nicely :-o ;) The first screen on level 4 was really tricky so that's where I got to :)

Rocket Queen :music:

Required listening this week! :)

And much more engaging than the games. I'm not sure I'll bother playing them a 2nd time. Although I did actually play Rocket Repairman twice because I didn't get a screen shot and I couldn't remember my score. Made all the more painful because I dislike that game more than the other 2.

Repairman: 7551 (sorry for the rushed photo, but that score disappears fast :) )

Rescue: 5 saved

Rocket Man: 3800

I'm not complaining too hard though - I did vote for them (in my defence, it was because I enjoy trying new games, and I forget that trying new games does not always mean they will be good games :D )

 We're used to some gruelling picks in the HSC (usually my bonus games - only Jungle Journey has crept into this season... so far!)... Let me know if you got to level 2 on repair man as that will trump the scores.

Rocket Man is ok but you really need to be patient and only drop down to get those between the narrow platforms. The twitchy l/r controls and surpluss of fuel suggest the author intends you to go the long routes around the platforms; but you keep getting temped into the shortcuts. :skull:

Improved to 13,800 level 3 after a bunch of goes.

Rocket Rescue the more you shoot on the first stages the more you have to rescue = higher score/rating. I think you can steer up/down on the first stages to some extent

I was determined to beat level 3 on Rocket Man despite the game being annoying it's strangely playable. After about 10 goes I managed to reach level 5, there is an extra man after level 3. You really need to be disciplined to play this one - I suppose if you had a space suit on you would try and be a bit more careful :ponder:

26,700

I did manage to get to the 2nd level of Repair Man. I started with the lower 3 items and worked my way up from there on level 1 until I got to the top. Of course level 2 is the same exact screens and Holy s#!t was it faster. I think I got one item and that was about it. You just don't have time to react at the best of times in level 1 - level 2 is downright unfair.

And I was probably a little unfair to the other 2 games. I can see myself trying them again, it's always hard to play games where the controls are so loose after playing something like Quasimodo which has such *great* controls. And I'm impressed by the homebrew in general - I love seeing new games for the 8bits.
