Mega Speedy, the ultimate 1050 upgrade. Intrest assesment.

Hello to all,

Yesterday I started the communication with the PCB manufacturer.

And the first questions have arrived, as I'd expect.

Hope to get it sorted soon, then I can finally calculate a price.

Requests have reached a stunning 85 pieces already.

So I'll make a small gamble and have 100 pieces made.

Documentation is also in the works. Hope some results can be shown soon.

Hello 1050 users,

Price will depend on the number of units that will be produced.

For sure it will be below $100.

More accuratelly, a preliminary calculation based on 50 units comes out below $65.

Put me down for 1 definitely, possibly 2 :)

If the price comes out below $65, I'll make it a definite 2 :)

If I can ask a very uneducated question, what is the difference between 1050s and 810s in terms of upgrades like this Mega Speedy board set? Meaning I assume this upgrade wouldn't work for 810s or someone would have said something about the compatibility already, I just don't know enough about either drive's hardware or internal dimensions.

Would it be possible (not now, down the line sometime) to make a version of this upgrade kit that would fit/work with 810 drives or does the 810 lack some necessary hardware that makes such on option unworkable?

The 810's drive mechanism is single density only which seriously limits its use.

I don't think it's the 810 mechanism that is limited to single density but rather the circuity is only FM, and double density requires MFM.

The FAQs list an 810 upgrade that added double density and other features:

810 Turbo (810T) by Neanderthal Computer Things (NCT) -- double-density, track buffering, speed comparable to Happy 810 Warp Speed

Hello BillC,

Yes, that's correct. The 810 is FM only, the Floppy Disk Controller Chip (1772 I think) cannot do any better.

And given the amount of work and the much smaller installed base....

There's not going to be an 810 unit made by me.

But of course, in a couple of weeks time all data is available....

The 810 has a wd1771 built in. Stock it can only do SD, but IIRC there was an upgrade that gave it DD capability. I don't think it was the Happy 810.

I agree building a 810 version of the Speedy may well be impossible.

Hello All,

The request count has reached 98 units.

And that's already more than I've expected.

So the request for the PCB's has been increased to 100 pieces.

There's still some details to work out.

For now, the lead time for manufacturing has been indicated as 20 to 30 days.

I'll try to order the PCB's in advance, so they can be produced whilst I discuss some details.

In the mean time, another addition has been made possible.

The unit also works with the firmware of Toms drive. (Developed in Poland if I'm informed correctly)

And more information on how to program the unit will be available in a little while.
