SmittyB
'lo all, I'm now the proud owner of a PAL 7800 with Asteroids and Ninja Golf but I'm having some minor issues with the display being very dark. I've heard that 2600 games appear darker than usual but even the 7800 games seem dim. I believe the signal from the 7800 is very weak as my LCD TV couldn't reliably display the image in colour, but did so at full brightness when it could, while my CRT displays the colour fine albeit dark and noisy. Could it be that the weak signal is causing the darker colour? Is this normal or do I need to break out the soldering iron? If it is normal would an RF signal booster brighten the colours or lessen the noise? (I don't want to invest in one if it won't make a difference). +Mitch
How are you connecting it to the TV. Manual switchbox, auto switchbox, RCA to F-jack adapter? Mitch
SmittyB
Just a cable going from the 7800 straight into the aerial socket on my TV. The cable and TV are perfectly fine, I'm using the same cable I used for my 2600 which worked perfectly.
Mitch
I forgot you said it was a PAL 7800... It could be the RF modulator is slightly out of tune. Do you have any small plastic hex wrenches? Mitch
SmittyB
I believe I might, or I might be able to find something that would work. I had a look inside for any bad capacitors when I found this problem and I think I recall seeing a couple of potentiometers, I take it these might need adjusting very slightly. +Mitch
The two on the mother board are for adjusting the color for 7800 mode and 2600 mode. The one that you likely need to adjust is the one inside the metal box in the upper left corner. It probably only needs very slight adjustment. +SmittyB
Great... is there an easy way of getting into the modulator?
Mitch
There is a hole in the side to allow access for a plastic hex wrench. Mitch
SmittyB
I see it, thanks. I'll see if I can find something to fit that wont short out the board.
SmittyB
Well I think I've got something that could turn it but there's this red part in the way that also looks like some sort of tall potentiometer. Any idea what it is? It would be handy if it turned out that is what I need to change.
Mitch
No, that's for adjusting the audio. There should be a hole on the other side of the metal box as well, if I am remembering correctly. Mitch
SmittyB
There is but I couldn't see anything through the accessible hole. I'll have another look later, maybe I missed something.
SmittyB
Nope, nothing in the left hole. I'll have to look for something small enough to fit.
SmittyB
I got it, the picture is better now thanks although overall it's still noticeably worse than my 2600jr with noise and some ghosting.
