tonyankyfan1
Greetings- When inserting cartridge and turning game ON, sometimes get "SHUT OFF POWER BEFORE inserting CARTRIDGE or EXPANSION MODULE, black screen. I shut game off and insert game properly as i had done the first time and it clears up and allows to play game and sometimes you have to keep trying. What is this about??? Thanks Anthony
Rhomaios
It's just not making contact with the cart properly. Try cleaning your carts and using can air to spray the inside of the cartridge slot. Imagine it similar to a gray screen on the NES or something. +5-11under
Spray some contact cleaner, such as DeoxIT into the connector (followed by inserting a cartridge a bunch of time in a row). Also inspect the pins, to make sure they're all straight.

+Yurkie
Old CV carts are flakey. Press reset if cart doesn't load.
NIAD
Numerous remedies to this problem such as cleaning the cartridge edge connector with 90% Isoprophyl Alcohol, De-oxit or a clean pencil eraser. You should clean the cartridge connector in the system as well and probably best to use a thin piece of firm cardboard to insert in and out of the connector with alcohol or de-oxit. Cartridges are pretty hardy and a good cleaning usually remedies things, but if you still get that error message, press the Reset button first, a couple times if needed, before powering off and reinserting the cartridge. If all else fails and you have other carts that work fine on the system, then the cart in question is indeed bad and can be any number of issues like worn or broken contacts, cold solder joint, fried from an electrical surge, etc., etc., but most of these issues are fixable as well with the proper soldering skills, but you'll have to damage the label to open up the cart. Even if you can't salvage a cartridge(s), they are still valuable to someone in the Homebrew community to recycle.
tonyankyfan1
Thanks Yurkie and NIAD!!! Damn dude on eBay sold me a trashed cart. I tried it on both CV consoles, same issues. all the other carts work fine. I got reimbursed, and he didn't want it back-Probably knew it was bad. So-Now, I will do some surgery LOL, I don't care about the labels, as i can make perfect color copies, some good ole 3M Spray adhesive, good as new. =) I cleaned both consoles w electronic spray cleaner w lube, one console seems to be more sensitive then the other, So i will take your advice "NIAD" w the cardboard and re clean it. I hit the reset button 100X with no avail... Just saying. Thanks Anthony
tonyankyfan1
Do we donate or sell carts that don't work to the home-brew, members? I don't have a probe donating it to keep our hobby alive. =) Numerous remedies to this problem such as cleaning the cartridge edge connector with 90% Isoprophyl Alcohol, De-oxit or a clean pencil eraser. NIAD
There's a thread in the AtariAge MarketPlace for listing things you are giving away freely or for the cost of shipping. A single cart may go unclaimed, but if you have other stuff, there are always people jumping on these free items. BITD, recycled cart shells were all that was available, but now that a cart mold has been made, the Homebrewers have new cart shells made. There are probably many other hobbyists who still recycle shells that could use it.
Rick Dangerous
I've had this issue with a few carts, as well as misspelled words. Cleaned the crap out of everything and it all seems to work fine. It's fun learning the particular quirks and possible errors of a new system I've found the CV to be a little more "touchy" than Atari systems (2600-7800) but a little more reliable than the NES
