frank_c
Take an excellent Radica Space Invaders and gut it... and add a little twist I kept thinking "why am I cutting up these extension cords?" when D sub connectors are stupid cheap. So I wired up a pass through for a stock controller and can leave the extension cords plugged in to the CV full time. Also converted a RSI to use on my Astrocade. Just stick for now, until I figure out a pot option I like. I will move the inner button to the right side and fill in the holes. Leaving the extension cords plugged into the Astrocade is an even better idea since the ports are buried on the back panel. atariguy1021
Nice! I still would prefer a solution that takes the stock controller out of the mix entirely, but this is a step in the right direction.
frank_c
That's why the buttons are missing on the right side of the Astrocade controller. That was going to be a CV controller but my original idea wasn't going to work out. I still have a couple ideas though, and two of Grips' PC boards to play with. I have two more RSI's and I will make another CV and Astrocade controller so I'll have a pair of each. When I find RSI's on eBay for a nice price I'll snag a couple more. chart45
is there enough space to put the kp12 keypad ??? cause if you have the grips pcb its the way to go
frank_c
There might be room for the board if the battery box is cut out. I haven't gotten that far yet. So far the stock controller is only used to select levels. I couldn't tell you the last time I played an overlay game. Could have been when the games were new! I think the keypad is the sticking point. I looked up the dimensions and I don't think there is room on the top of the case for the pad. I had disassembled a SA controller and that pad won't fit either. At least not where I want it. Edited December 23, 2014 by frank_c

I had a similar idea a few months back. I sat down with a 12 key keypad and a radica stick for about five minutes while I put the keypad in different positions, didn't see any configuration worth trying. Maybe you'll crack the code! I was afraid that the keypad would get in the way.
+wongojack
I did something similar for the Intellivision 2 years ago. There is so much room in the Radica that the pass through is very easy. I can see how chopping up Genny extension cords would get old. I used a stock serial cable and trimmed the heck of the end to make it fit. That worked fine and I saved on cabling. I've also made a 7800 stick, but I've never bothered to try it on my Coleco. Is it true that the 7800 and Coleco controllers are interchangeable? frank_c
I haven't tried this one yet but I have one of the NES pads GoldenAxe converted to 7800 and it works fine on CV. The D subs were easy to put in. Drilled a hole just about the height of the connector and took out the rest with a Dremel.
+wongojack
Yeah, I did the same for the Intellivision pass through - I've gotta ask though. Where is the blue LED?
frank_c
Blue LEDs are more played out than the phrase "played out."

You can bring 'em back! http://atariage.com/forums/topic/214965-intellivision-joystick-hacked-a-tv-pp/ I did replace it . . . with a Red one
atariguy1021
Blue LEDs are more played out than the phrase "played out." When did blue LED's become the equivalent of a hair band in the 90's... I didn't throw out my Cinderella cassettes then and I'm not going to stop adding blue LED's to everything now...
frank_c
I am putting new switches into an old Roland sampler I've had since 1990. While it's apart I considered taking out the red LED's and going to blue. Maybe I'll do the ones on the keypad and leave the patch buttons red.
