Lussuria
Hello everyone!! I was looking for a little advice as apparently googling this has prooved fruitless. I picked up a bunch of second hand Atari 2600 games at a garage sale and found that the copy of River Raid has a chip visible on the board from the opening? I have another (same version) copy of River Raid already that does not have this chip (actually none of my games with the same "look in" opening had this chip. The cart itself doesn't seem to work - and get's sligtly jammed in the device when I put it in, however it does still fit and clip in. Anyone happen to know what it might be? Thanks for any adivce! alex_79
Your cart uses an EPROM instead of a MASK ROM to store the game. Most games uses mask roms, which are cheaper when produced in high quantity, while eproms were used for prototypes and in case of small production runs. The little chip you can see on the board is an inverter which is needed beacuse eproms need a "chip select" signal which is the opposite of what the Atari console uses. The board in your cart is probably like the one posted in this old thread: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/34524-activision-river-raid-eprom-cart-scan/
