TaskenLander
Thinking of getting this game as I just acquired a Jag, but wanted to know first if the game is still fun/playable if you only have the regualr D pad style controller and not the 'dial' version. Thanks in advance, Mike
+CyranoJ
YES! T2K is probably the Jags best game. With either controller.
scobb
Awesome game with either controller - agree 100%
Rex Dart
Nope, with digital control you might as well be playing the SNES port. Sorry. Don't fool yourself. The analog control really makes the game.
TaskenLander
Whats a good price for just the cart? Is $24.99 shipped okay/fair? Thanks again
+CyranoJ
The analog control really makes the game. And which analogue control would that be? The digital rotary? pfffffffffffffffffffffttt.
ovalbugmann
Yes! , T2K is quite fun even with a regular Jaguar controller, so go for it! - I've played it a lot of hours that way. The thing is the rotary controller makes it that much nicer and gives it a bit better control of your ship, I think, this really only becomes a pronounced factor in the later levels, like the quite hard level 64, that Jeff made extra hard I heard. You can usually get one on ebay for about $60 USD. But just get the game first, play awhile with the D-pad, and decide later if you like it enough to put more money into the game with a Jaguar rotary purchase. I recently got a VM Labs NUON DVD player just for Tempest 3000(and Iron Soldier 3) also it's VLM too, luckily I have an analogue stick controller that came with it and T3K is better with it than the stock digital NUON original d-pad. +LS650
Seeing how as 99.9% of the folks who have ever played T2K did it with just a regular Jag pad, and yet the game has always had rave reviews, yes, I'd say you can probably get some enjoyment out of it with just an ordinary stock controller.
+save2600
Nope, with digital control you might as well be playing the SNES port. Sorry. Don't fool yourself. The analog control really makes the game. Wrong. SNES port? You mean that little Atari Arcade 'greatest hits' multi-cart? Absolutely no comparison. TaskenLander: T2K on Jaguar needs to be seen, heard and played to be believed.

TaskenLander
F**k it. JUST "accidentally" bought a copy loose off of amazon for $23.99 shipped. Was debating and I hit the 'check out' button, expecting it would take me to one more final screen but -- nope! I bought it! :-p Hope the game is as fun as everyone says. This 'll only be my second Jaguar game after AvP. Thanks for the feedback! Mike

Austin
The game controls well with the standard d-pad. So well that I've never once felt the urge to buy a rotary controller.
+LS650
Next you'll be esnipping a ratty copy of BattleSphere for $500!
Rex Dart
SNES port? You mean that little Atari Arcade 'greatest hits' multi-cart? That's the one. D-pad Tempest is d-pad Tempest. It's like racing with a flight stick. I'd say you can probably get some enjoyment out of it with just an ordinary stock controller. You probably can, yes. Some people like microwaved bacon, too. That comparison might be a bit overboard, but if you've played the original Tempest in the arcades, you can tell that something is missing. It's not as bad as playing Pac-Man via motion controls, but you can tell that it could be better. But hey, might as well pick up the game now & get a rotary controller down the road. It's a good game, but it's not as good with a d-pad. Edited January 20, 2015 by Rex Dart
Rick Dangerous
I've always had good luck playing it with the regular controller, which is quite responsive. It plays great IMO. That being said some day i'd like to pick up a rotary controller just to see what all the fuss is about..
+LS650
I've played it with both. IMHO the rotary controls are overrated.

You're saying you have an analog stick controller for the Nuon's Tempest 3k? Are you aware of a source for these? Does the game recognize it as something different or does it act like a digital pad? Bill Loguidice
Considering the relative low cost of rotary controllers, if you're going to bother investing in a Jaguar and Tempest, there's no reason not to also go for a rotary controller, kind of making the decision to settle for standard controls moot. Well, $50 bucks isn't a sum totally worth disregarding considering you would only use it for one game and the stock controller works just fine. Better than fine i'd say..

Better than fine i'd say.. It does also work with several homebrews. And again, my opinion is if you're going to go through the expense and effort of getting a Jaguar and Tempest, another $40 - $60 is not exactly breaking the bank to play the game in arguably the best possible way. +remowilliams
On a system where people regularly pay hundreds of dollars for what is nearly literally shit in a cartridge shell, $50 is spare change T2K is best by far with rotary control. +Saturn
T2K is the bomb either way (imo). I played it for years with a standard pad and loved it. Then, I bought a sh*tload of Tyrant rotaries and liked it so much better, I went as far as heavily modifying my Jaguar store display kiosk into the only '2 player Tempest Dual' kiosk in existence. Well worth it imo, even with the desecration of a valuable Atari center piece Plus, if you patch the ROM using JiFFI for infinite lives (and have a Skunkboard), it can be an entirely new experience. At least, it was/is for me since the upper levels are pretty difficult. Good luck.

The knob where the dpad was, below the dpad, or on the back middle of the pad? Also who is the ebay seller of choice to get these from?
