Best Colecovision Emulator for a Mac?

Tron Unit

Recommended Posts

Currently I am using Mugrat but I just bought a 9-pin USB controller adapter to configure my Coleco controller and it says joystick support only works with the purchase of a $30 registration code.

Are there better emulators with full joystick functionality for Mac? Haven't tried ColEm but I think I had it on my old PPC Mac and is no longer supported in Mavericks?

CrabEmu added ColecoVision support a while back. You might give it a try, though I can't speak to the level of accuracy or compatibility (it's quite good with SMS and SG-1000 games, however).

Thanks! Good to know! Maybe they should add that info on their Supported Cores page.

Did you even bother trying it? I wouldn't have linked it if it didn't support ColecoVision.

No I didn't because the Supported Cores page does not specify Colecovision support but I'll give it a shot.

Maybe there's beta cores for OpenEmu that support Colecovision. I don't know because I can't run it on Snow Leopard.

Also, I use Mugrat, and my Mac/PC joystick works fine on it. I didn't need to pay anything extra. There's an "emulator enhancer" that you need to put in the right place maybe to get it working. That will let you set the buttons and directions. It's just Nagware, I think. It gives you a few more options in various emulators written by that Bannister fellow.

I am running Yosemite. I have the Emulator Enhancer folder placed in the Application Support folder as per the installation instructions but still don't get joystick support in Mugrat or Jum52 for Atari 5200. I can only configure keyboard buttons.

Strange. As I said, I am still on Snow Leopard and joystick support works for me. The Bannister emulators haven't been updated in forever. I would suggest using OpenEmu if you have Yosemite. I'm going to switch over too once I get a new Mac hopefully sometime late this year.

It may also be that it's not recognizing your Coleco joystick with USB adaptor as a legitimate USB joystick. In that case there are some utilities out there that will let you map USB devices to keyboard inputs. It'll take a while to configure everything, but it might work.

I would still try OpenEmu before you do anything else.

Thank you for posting this, I didn't know about CrabEmu, unfortunately it still won't run Princess Quest. :(

You're welcome! If you let the developer (BlueCrab) know, he may update it to add support for Princess Quest. He goes a long time between updates, but in my experience he's helpful, and is interested in supporting the full library of each console. He added the code to handle weird Korean SMS games, for instance.

I downloaded OpenEmu v1.0.4 but there's no Colecovision support. When I go to Cores it shows CrabEmu 2.0.1 installed. That's the latest version.

ColecoVision support has been there since version 1.1, using the BlueMSX core.

BlueMSX is not listed under Cores in OpenEmu. I tried looking for it and it shows it is a Windows executable file only.

I don't know anything about the interaction between CrabEmu and OpenEmu, but I've got CrabEmu 0.2.0 on my machine and just ran a CV ROM (Gorf) with no problem.

None of my CV roms will open in OpenEmu at all. Just goes to a black screen. I downloaded CrabEmu by itself separately along with the Colecovision bios and configured it in preferences. I can load the ROMS but can't get past the menu select screen because it is not taking either keyboard or joystick input even though the "Allow keyboard input while gamepad is selected" box is checked. Also the renderers for CrabEmu don't appear quite as good as Mugrat because it looks like they automatically deinterlace the video from what I can tell from the menu screen fonts.

I had the same problem first time with CrabEmu. Try manually setting the keyboard and joystick inputs, even if they already look like they are set properly. For some reason I had to do this for the settings to "take".

Yeah, the prefs for CrabEmu are historically a bit buggy, but they do work eventually. And unlike a certain other emulator author, BlueCrab doesn't disable features and ask you to pay for them. :D

Plus Mugrat is very poorly maintained in my experience, at least on OS X. It went years and years without supporting the second CV fire button!

Yeah I can't get CrabEmu to work with any device input keyboard or gamepad. I'm giving up. I've spent way more time than I should trying to make it work.

NVM, I finally got the keyboard at least to work. You have to go in and manually map EVERY single key. What a PITA! Still can't get my controller configured.

Welcome to the Mac emulation experience! :)

I think you'll be happier just sticking to OpenEmu. It seems like Goldenegg must be using a beta 1.1 version as the latest available download on the site is 1.0.4. At least we know Coleco support is coming. I can't wait to get a new Mac so I can use OpenEmu. The philosophy behind the project is to make the Mac emulation experience much better than it has been, and I have high hopes for it.

Sounds to me also that the Mac just isn't recognizing your Coleco controller + USB adaptor as a USB device at all. There are USB utilities that can help you check if it's detecting anything that's attached.

I can't even play anything at all on OpenEmu. At least CrabEmu plays the roms and I can use the keyboard now. As for the controller, what utilities would you suggest to see if it recognizes it?

I think it was called USB Overdrive, but I'm not 100% sure. It was years ago that I tried it and I no longer have it on my system.

Welcome to the Mac emulation experience! :)

Mac emulation used to be more competitive with Windows/DOS. Back in the OS 9 days there were, for the time, good emulators like ColEm, iNES, SNES9x, and so on.

One didn't have to rely on Bannister and his "emulator enhancer" to get simple things like a scaler. Some people were unhappy that he wanted full price for the version 2 of that (no discount for version 1 buyers), moved his emulators to requiring version 2, and deleted the versions that worked with version 1 from his server. John Stiles, as I recall, offered an enhancement module for his emulators but he didn't make the video output in the basic emulator ultra-tiny to force people into it.

I think it would have been less annoying to me if he had charged a small price for an emulator rather than releasing them as crippleware.

I haven't had a chance to follow up on this thread, as I've been sick.

It turns out that as of OpenEmu 1.0.4, support for several of the cores have been moved to the experimental build only. I had 1.0.3 installed, upgraded to 1.0.4 and several systems were no longer supported, including ColecoVision. Downloading the experimental build from their site resolved that issue.

After installing the experimental build, it may be required to 'enable' the systems to be show in the interface. Open the preferences and choose 'Library'. In the 'Available Libraries' section, enable all the systems you're interested in.

MESS is very capable with many consoles and computer, including the Colecovision and Adam and makes a nice alternative even in non-windows platforms (Mac, various Linux OS)

Here are some links for MAC binaries:
