Jaguar CD Worth?

DaytonaUSA

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I have a store near me that has a Jaguar system with the CD add-on. I was just curious what they're worth. The only ones I can find online are coupled with tons of games, so it's hard to tell if I'd be over-paying for one of these or not. It's in great condition, no boxes though, just systems and controller with cords.

Thanks.

That's a really tough call. The going rate on eBay seems to be $150-$200 for just the JagCD unit, in good working order. They are a tad delicate, though not as bad as some folks make out.

I had one for a couple of years, but after I bought a Skunkboard the JagCD never got touched, and I ended up selling it away. I don't miss it at all, because almost all homebrew releases can be handled by the Skunkboard.

If you are a completist collector, I guess the JagCD might be worth that much coin to you. Heed the advice above about testing it before handing the money over. If you just want to play games, go buy a Sillyventure Skunkboard.

First thing's first: no matter what price, you *WILL* be overpaying! :rolling:

Now that we've gotten that out of the way, I'd say a decent price for a loose one in working order would be around $100. That's what they *used* to sell for around here not that long ago. If you had to put a new $20 laser in it, no big whoop - still a price that you don't feel like you just made a seriously bad investment out of. Upwards or a little beyond $200 for a used one in questionable shape is a wee bit much, but that seems to be what they're going for these days.

Don't get me wrong, the JagCD has a handful of really good releases (original and homebrew) and it's a great curiosity piece and thing to have to compliment your Jaguar collection for sure. I do miss the opening roar, cube and falling Atari letters of the normal system startup when you've got the CD attached though.

If you don't have a Skunkboard AND have access to a PC to burn the special Atari CD format, then I can see where some might draw even better value out of it. And don't let others here tell you the VLM makes the JagCD purchase totally worth it. If you're into that sort of thing, ummm, okay - but it really is an overrated "feature" or use of the system IMO. iTunes has the best visualizer I've seen to date, but Austin's got a great side-by-side vid showing the difference between Xbox, JagCD and the Nuon. Nuon FTW!

Are you talking about the system itself + the JagCD? No games or anything else? Who knows what they're selling for in a retail store, but I'd venture to guess they've already looked up the "value" on eBay and are using that a guide. That said, I'd expect to pay around $300-$350 for a Jag and CD combo in excellent working condition and great cosmetic shape. Can always try to talk them down a bit if you've got cash in hand. Upside for going retail is that you don't have to worry about some asshat poorly packaging your stuff. And that can make all the difference between a working and non-working system. ;)

It's the jag system and the cd add-on. No box, packaging, game, etc. Just the system, add-on and controller. It's not priced TOO high, but yes, I'll definitely have them test it for me (they have CD games there).

Honestly, I'm kinda on an Atari kick. I just picked up a XEGS brand new in box yesterday, and I think I've been bit by the bug. But I HAVE owned a Jag in the past, and I remember it being a stinker. It's the only reason why I'm hesitating...

If your going to buy the Jag + CD Player combo - cool you will enjoy it. If your not going to buy the Jaguar + JagCD unit, could you tell me where it is so I might be able to go to the store and check it out and possibly buy it? I'd like to get a spare JagCD Player as I watch movies I encode in Cinepak and play the CD games a lot on my units. Is it at Bookman's at 19th ave. & Northern or a pawn shop or something?

You'll buy it then it'll be on the marketplace a month later when you get bored or need the money. Don't waste your time man. If you want to experience the Jag, pay less for a straight console bundle on eBay with a few good games and without the CD attachment.

*edit: Looks like you already decided against it. At $200 it actually would have been a good buy (could have resold the CD for a good chunk of that), but it sounds like the store got wise to the real value.. maybe a little too wise. It's good you passed.

Wow, thanks for the insults across the forums.

Part of being a gamer is wanting to play things I haven't played before. Yes, I've moved on from many games and systems. I recirculate my gaming funds so that I don't spend much money on my hobby. There are also games and systems I refuse to ever let go of. Games and systems that are really near and dear to me, some of which I didn't even have as a kid (no nostalgia).

I don't really see what's wrong with this. I know you gave me lip about the N-Gage on my own sale forum, but I simply sold it so I could get the Atari XE, the games of which appeal much more to me. I've NEVER seen an XE for sale in person. I wasn't about to pass that opportunity up.

But no, I must be an evil re-seller because I don't horde 10,000 games in my small living room. I guess we'll just look past the fact I lost out on 50 bucks by selling the N-Gage when I did. And you know what? It was so worth it, and i'm happier for it. In fact, the last several items I've sold all at a loss, including my arcade machine. But sometimes things come along that are higher priorities, sometimes even outside the gaming world.

I figure we're also looking past the fact that I had to sell off 95% of my collection when I lost my job. No, no.. I'm sure that just looked like "Daytona cashing in!" to you.

Maybe think about the situation or kindly ask in a PM if you're that curious, first. And frankly, as long as I'm happy and reselling for large profits, what harm am I doing? I wouldn't sell my stuff so quick on these boards if I was charging list for everything.

Have fun gaming, and maybe care more about what you're doing with your stuff than what I'm doing with mine, and you just might be happier for it.

Way to overblow the issue dude, seriously. I actually posted this response to your Jaguar question before even seeing the stuff about the N-Gage. In terms of the Jaguar CD, I was looking out for your best interests. Based on the far better systems you have parted with, you will resell it, and I don't mean that in an "evil reseller" sense. I mean that in a "my god, I just wasted my #*$&ing money" sense. You will not like the platform (the Jaguar CD).

The N-Gage issue is a legitimate concern to me though. If you think you are going to flip something without trying it, then don't bother posting a thread asking us for advice. The way I see it is we've wasted our time trying to help you build a solid collection, nothing more, nothing less. Your fleeting moments and forum spurts with consoles is fine (if a bit annoying) and a quirk of your personality. I can't fault you for that. Just don't ask us for advice if you're not even going to use what you buy, there's no point in us responding.

I'm not overblowing the issue at all. You insulted me, how I collect/play games, and sided with the store which marked up a system by double because you didn't want me to try it.

"You will not like the Jaguar CD" - And you know this based on what? I like some of the screwy consoles. In fact, usually the more unpopular, the better. Quarky hardware and software is fun. But please, enlighten me. I still have my freakin games.com simply because I like Sega. But no, no... I must be selling it soon because you assume I hate it.

"Issue is a legitimate concern to me". How is it a legitimate concern to you? We're talking about games. Can you not ask me a question about a game or system you might end up selling? Like I would care. These things are property, and nothing more. Some pieces of property you keep because of nostalgia and/or because you enjoy it, and some you move on from and sell. These aren't children. What does it matter if I sell something that I own, and that I took an interest in to try?

And once again, you're coming at me. You're attacking me unprovoked. If you don't like the response, don't talk down to people if you have nothing to say. Clearly you weren't taught this as a child.

Childish insults aren't helping your situation either. And you know what I was taught as a child? Not to take advantage of others nor waste their time. It's a little something called "common courtesy and consideration". Try it some time.

$200 would've been a nice deal to experience the Jag and CD, $400 would not be. There are often good deals on Jag systems here in the Marketplace. Realistically, the Jag CD attachment is only for hardcore collectors. The games are largely garbage and that's coming from someone who owns the unit and all the games.

I decided against it. It's located at Flashback games in Tempe. They raised the price on it. Now they want a whopping $399, when I swear to god it was 200 last night. Ah well, I at least got the new XE from them for a good price.

Hope that helps, bud.

Ok, thanks! yeah that's a bit much!, thanks anyways - he seemed to raise the price when you inquired about it? Doubling it!, wow he must have done a finished sold auctions advanced search on ebay, lol Opinions will vary -every one has one! lolz. I think the Jaguar CD Player is cool, it has the Jeff Minter programmed VLM Virtual Light Machine for playing CDs and some cool games like BattleMorph, World Tour Racing, Primal Rage, Robinson's Requiem, Myst, Elansar, Phila, Hover Strike and the great Iron Soldier 2! with fmv's all of which are pretty decent as well as a host of homebrews. And I convert movies to run on it so I watch those too. You could get one at myatari.com or best-electronics-ca.com for $175, still. Ever since I got the Jag I knew there was supposed to be a CD add on for it with that big round indentation it has on top! I always leave mine plugged in.

Common courtesy is coming into my thread and insulting me? I'll remember that. Now please get off my back and judge your own life instead of mine.

Yep! iron Soldier 2 was the primary reason I really wanted one. The first Iron Soldier was one of the very few Jaguar games I liked. I'll look into best-electronics sometime, although I heard some iffy stories about that place, I might take the risk. Sorry I couldn't help you get another one for your collection. I'm sure that's exactly what he did, which is his choice. I'm sure someone will buy it eventually, as they're almost impossible to find any longer.

Thanks for the PM btw, I responded to ya. Have a good one, bud!

You took what Austin said the wrong way. He wasn't attacking you. He's just not that kind of guy. He was just saying you probably wouldn't like it and you would just end up getting rid of it.

If you saw his other posts (including all the ones that have been deleted by mods and the ones on my other forums, like my for sale forum) he's made it perfectly clear that he meant much more than just that. If he wants to , he can feel free to PM me and tell me that himself (which he's made no effort to do). Otherwise, the plethora of posts he's made on every active thread of mine says differently to me.

I don't get it. I've never had any issues with the guy over the many years we've both been here. Maybe he had a bad night. Maybe he's the biggest n-gage fanboy and took me selling it so that I could finally get an XE to a personal level. I don't know, haha. That's his beef. Thanks for the post, bud.

There is no risk in dealing with Best. Sure, he might be moody if you waste his time, but there's zero risk of getting ripped off. Spend some time in the Jaguar section here if you're really interested in the platform.
