Most impressive 7800 games?

I've always wondered - My understanding is that the NES has chips in it's cartridges that effectively increased it's processing power. If a 7800 game had both the sound chips and some sort of processing chip like the NES, would it have been able to play games like Mega Man / Super Mario 3 / Battletoads, etc? The hardware inside the 7800 and NES is similar with the 7800 being more capable in certain ways (like video resolution and memory). The 2600 and NES were both pushed to their limits, but sadly it seems like the same didn't happen with the 7800.

It's not that it's impossible, but that it's probably not cost efficient to do so. Yes, the NES did it to maintain a technological (in appearance) edge in the market for a few years. Atari probably knew Nintendo was doing this, and was going to go along similar lines, but were too cheap to ever really see it through.

Sure you can, you could put RAM and a hefty ARM chip or such a thing on a cart, you point the RAM to Maria and party on it with the ARM chip. DOOM anyone? It takes away from the fun, IMHO.

Wasn't there an issue though where the CPUs didn't have access to the bus?

I thought one of the big differences was that when PPU was running, the CPU still had access to the BUS; while when MARIA was running, it halted the CPU.

The only problem with that "should have been created in 1988" was that several of the games shown didn't exist yet (Midnight Mutants, Scrapyard Dog, Ninja Golf, Alien Brigade, Mean 18, BasketBrawl) ;) ;) But yeah, would have been a great commercial, for 1990.
