+MrFish
Does anybody have an executable or disk version of 1983 Dig Dug (5200) that will run correctly on real XL/XE hardware using SIO2PC or SIDE I? I'm running a stock 800XL (have tried it on XE's too) and the only version I can find will either run with the sound/music being incorrect (one voice not playing) via SIO2PC, or with the graphics being incorrect (blue background at the top being black instead) via SIDE I. As far as I can tell there is only one XL/XE compatible version floating around out there on the major archives. With SIO2PC I've run it from MyPico DOS and the Homesoft disk, and then with the SIDE I've used the executable of course. The problem exhibits itself in Altirra too, at least with the disk version problem. I haven't tried emulating SIDE I to see if it shows up there too, but I'm assuming it will.
Jetboot Jack
I am not aware of that version - I have physical and digital copies of both the carts Atari published for the A8, is the 5200 version different in anyway from either of those two differing versions? sTeVE
+MrFish
Well, I just labeled it as "5200" -- since it's identical to that version (as far as I know) -- in order to distinguish it from the 1982 version a little more. But yes, I am talking about the second Dig Dug that was officially released on the 8-bits in various formats. +DrVenkman
There are versions with a text title screen and a graphical screen. I believe I have both as working .xex files but I will check when I get home. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Interestingly, the graphical title screen version requires holding down the Option key to disable BASIC while booting from an SIO2USB device, while the text title screen version I have will simply reboot over and over again if you hold down Option. SS
Now that you mention it, I also don't seem to have one that works with my USB SIO2PC and 800XL setup. I've tried the handful of files that I have acquired from different sources but non seem to want to work. Weird. I don't think that I've ever noticed it before because I have both the 1982 and 1983 versions on cart and would generally just play the games via that way if I was in the mood. Both of the carts play fine on my system, BTW. (EDIT - I do not seem to have an .xex file of Dig Dug '83 so I wasn't able to try that one like DrVnkman did.) Thanks for checking, but I can tell from the title screens that they're both for the 1982 version of Dig Dug. I don't think that I've ever noticed it before because I have both the 1982 and 1983 versions on cart and would generally just play the games via that way if I was in the mood. Both of the carts play fine on my system, BTW. I'd be using a cart too, but I sold off all my 1983 version carts, not realizing I wouldn't be able to find a useable XEX. They're cheap enough for me to buy another one of course, but it'd be nice to have a file version for convenience.
+DrVenkman
What do you think is different about the 1983 release? I've got several more .xex and .atr versions including one that indicates in the file name that it's a 1983 release, but it also says it's an OSb only version and doesn't load on my 800XL. +MrFish
They're completely different versions, not just variations on a common version: Dig Dug 1982 Dig Dug 1983
Jetboot Jack
Yes I have those two versions as carts and bin files - and they display the same, no corruption on the bin file versions compared with the actual cart. The one with the graphic logo is the unknown to me, and is not the Datasoft disk release which is the 1983 version... sTeVE
+DrVenkman
Ah, I remember that one now. It's the version I had on cart as a teenager. I know I have it as a .bin or .car file, but not an .atr or .xex. +DrVenkman
Okay, now that I'm home I checked - I DO have the 1983 version as an .xex but it will only load with OS/b.

+DrVenkman
I tried loading the Translator disk into my XL first but still was unable to load the 1983 version at all. Disclaimer time here: I'm a Dig Dug snob. It's one of my Top 5 games of all time, on any platform. Even though I recall having the '83 version as a kid, after farting around with the various files tonight on my emulators, of the A8 versions, I gotta say I generally prefer the 1982 version. Even though I do like the detailed dirt texture in the 1983 version, the '82 version has much better detailed player/monster models. On the other hand, the 7800 version puts all the other period home versions to shame including all the 8-bit Atari computer/5200 versions. Paul Westphal
The one with the multi- colored sprites does not play as well as the "dirt " one with single colored sprites. Both were released on cart for the 8 bit. Player control is sluggish in the multi colored sprite one.
+DrVenkman
The NES version wipes up the floor with the 7800 version... Well you know what they say about opinions. That said, if you track down an .xex file that works with XL machines, or get physical cart you can dump, please share. I'll do the same. +MrFish
Well you know what they say about opinions. Pixel and audio resolution aren't opinions, but they make a good basis for a meaningful one. I'll suffice it on the audio comparison to say that the 7800 version audio comes directly from the 2600 version. Here's a couple screenshots though: Edited July 11, 2015 by MrFish
Caterpiggle
Hello MrFish, I remember you that you did posted the previous photo of mock-up "arcade" Dig-Dug. I wonder if you will be able to released arcade Dig-Dug.xex or .atr soon ? Have you done to complied from real Arcade into Atari 8 bits version ? Remember I did posted mock-up Dig-Dug on the XEGS Box ?

The 'XEX' version on Kheffington's disk set seems to work fine via SIO2PC, at least I can't detect any audio issue compared to the ROM version. The color on top seems to be a holdover from whatever color register 2 was set to just before invoking the game. -SteveS
