danwinslow
Hi Folks - looking for a simple basic game like Battleship or similar, something that plays against the computer in kind of a turn based mode, without a bunch of complicated graphics. I'm looking for straight Atari Basic, and I'd need the source code. Any suggestions?
fujidude
Sorry, no suggestions at the moment. I'm curious about your criteria though. Care to enlighten?
+David_P
Were I a betting man, I'd guess that he wants to convert it to a two player game to be played over, say ,and Ethernet connection...
fujidude
LOL. I misread it. I just got done combing through programs and finding ones which are two player. ARCed em up and was about to upload. I'll go back and instead try to select 1 vs cpu. UPDATE: Okay I did scrounge a few which might work. One of my faves is NUKEWAR. Rybags
I've got Reversi (aka Othello) that went into my book - http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-400-800-xl-xe-reversi_27518.html Uses a custom font in Gr. 2 - from memory I converted the game from a pre-existing Basic program for another system. Fairly sure you can play the computer. I also did a version of Nim, though you can play the computer it'd have to be one of the most boring games around. fujidude
Yeah, NIM = dim.
+CharlieChaplin
Well, how about Tactwar: http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-400-800-xl-xe-tactwar_5232.html Allthough the atarimania info-screen says 1 player or 1 vs. 2, it is just a one player vs. computer game. Source is available in Atari Basic (and in my collection there is a Basic XL source as well). There is also Naval Battle by Antic: http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-400-800-xl-xe-naval-battle_3668.html in my eyes the best battleships game on the A8. The disk includes several files, one is for a 1 player version, another file for a 2 player version and there is also a demo version. Or how about Chess by John Krause (Compute): http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-400-800-xl-xe-chess_1021.html Last not least, how about some modem games ? They are for two players, but maybe they can be changed in such a way, they play via Ethernet cart. instead of modem ?!? There are four games: a) Telechess (BAS), b) Battleships (BAS), c) Modemchess (BAS) and d) Jellybeans (errm, not a Basic game, it uses ML)... modemgames.zip Edited August 13, 2015 by CharlieChaplin
danwinslow
Outstanding! Yes, the criteria was to find a suitable candidate for conversion to run over ethernet. The 2 player modem games, I assume, are probably the best target. Thanks, all.
Rybags
IMO the only versions of Battleships worth playing are the ones that have the larger grid size and allow salvo fire - like the one that was done for Amiga and other systems of the late 80s. sup8pdct
As promised, battleship basic game. Bit of history. My Cousin Peter Bradford wrote this in 81-82 on a Atari 400 with cassette drive. He originally named the ships as per there size, ie Aircraft carrier, battleship etc but remembering what size the ships are was troublesome. So he changed there names from 1 to 5. To Place ships, select position with joystick and press button. Direction is, straight up is 1, up-right diagonal is 2, right is 3 etc. The rest should be easy enough to work out.
