Those of us with the earliest machines should post some verification. I'll lead with photos of mine. One of them lost its label in the dishwasher (oops) but the shiney stamp remains. Number 26 is in my gallery already.

I actually don't own this one anymore. But since I don't see it on the list, I'll let be added as "in existence".

This perfectly working beaut was purchased for the purpose of housing my Incognito board. I ended up needing to sell it and the Incognito.

The keyboard was in excellent shape, after replacing the better part of the key inner plastic pieces from a spare I had on hand. I sold it to someone here on the east coast.

And yes, I removed the "DOM" sticker myself. :D

Just had my old 800 set up the past 2 weeks for the first time in 25+ years.  I've had my 800xl's in rotation for occasional gameplay the past several years, but the 800 had been sitting in my parents laundry room since the early 90s. Still works great!

NTSC :

83S AW71280 #203

I lucked into picking up my first 800 completely by chance yesterday.  I've had Atari 8-bitters since my first 800XL that I received as a kid back in 1984, followed by a 65XE and a 130XE a few years later... Other than some peripherals (my original 410 cassette drive that I got just after the 800XL, and a couple of 850s I got later on) I've never owned a beige box.

The machine-printed serial number reads:

83S AW 98218 #203

Looks like 20th week of 1983 - between May 16-22.

The handwritten serial number sticker below reads:

Aw512778 - 5-20

The 5-20 makes me think May 20th, which is right in the middle of the dates of the 20th week.

Based on a little research in the old Atari FAQ at ftp://rtfm.mit.edu/pub/faqs/atari-8-bit/faq it looks like this could be one of the last 800 units to have rolled off of the US production line in Sunnyvale, and among the last 800s produced worldwide.  Neat stuff.  I visited a bunch of the old buildings on Borregas Ave back in 2003, so it's neat to think I was within a stone's throw of where this 800 was built.

May (1983): Atari discontinued production of the 400 (both at 1173 Borregas,
Sunnyvale CA and at "Atari-Wong" in Hong Kong). Atari also discontinued
domestic production of the 800, and Atari's plant at 1173 Borregas, Sunnyvale
CA was idled. 800 production would commence (continue?) at "Atari-Wong" (for
the short-term).

June?: Atari discontinued production of the 800 (late production units made by
"Atari-Wong" in Hong Kong).

Mine (NTSC) follows the same format:  the machine-printed label says "407147" with a stamped "442" above it.  Below this label is a hand-written label that says "AW 359989 10-27".  27 October lies roughly at calendar week 44.

Good catch! I looked at the master list (in first post, updated) and the dates line up in most cases.

I found this handy site for getting date ranges given week numbers: https://www.epochcon....com/weeks/1983

Change the last part of the URL to reflect the year you're interested in.

sorry, normally I'd be able to do this. 800 is only under one monitor but I managed to get dozens of cables tangled, the 800's RF cable included.

I've been sick for 5 weeks now.   Getting better but crawling under a desk and table I'm not up to doing just yet.   The desk is credenza sized and I'm larger than I used to be.

I can't understand how cables going from point A to point B and point C to point D end up in a 1/2 meter knot.

I guess 35 years can do that.

[edit]

oops.  thought I was replying to a PM from ClausB.

Back to bed...

Thanks.

Here is the picture you asked for.  Sorry about the bad quality.  Holding a laptop screen face down while working a touchpad and buttons is more difficult than you'd think.  I have no other working camera ATM.

Thanks. Yours is the first GTIA model on our list.

When you get a better camera, would you also photograph the imprinted code at the rear bottom of the case?

This is news to me I mean that the label should indicate it's a GTIA machine.   My friend upgraded the 800 from OS A to OS B and from CTIA to GTIA.  I still have the old CTIA chip but sadly I misplaced the old ROMS.
