Coleco Chameleon .... hardware speculations?

Yeah don't get how it will work since the human body isn't flat but curved which isn't the best medium for a projection screen especially since everyone curves are different

Plus a laser strapped to the wrist doesn't seem safe since you can obviously accidentally point it towards your eyes or someone else's

Did this guy ever do a vid on the Razor Lazor? Whatever became of that device? :ponder:

Yeah, so in October of last year the Skarp Razor Laser raised 255% of its goal--meaning, of course they sounded able to deliver for far less. The shipping deadline was March 2016, which they missed. They moved it to "late 2016", but with the caveat that it may not happen until next year. Their marketing man (brought on after the IGG campaign) says they perhaps should have asked for money to do research rather than fund a product.

They admit to deleting negative comments, and won't promise to give regular updates. No refunds will be offered. Skarp's latest IGG update makes it sound like they've abandoned the crowdfunding site and will only take orders on their own website. Also mentioned is that their super-special laser fiber has a four-month lead time--and even then, the fiber may still need further tweaking. It would seem this is the fiber that connects the carrot and stick.

Ha! I read about half the comments section on the Cnet article. It might be hard to get approval for this device given the required laser dosage to burn human hair yet somehow remain safe for skin contact. Also some banter about sensor detecting hair color. My head hair is graying some but my beard is different and has every color of the rainbow represented in it: white, black, brown, blonde, and even a few reddish ones. It would be pretty odd if the laser razor simply left the lighter hairs untouched. I'm beginning to wonder if this product would even be safe or viable in worse case usage scenarios (ie older African American male with white beard). If the fiber burns hair follicles on contact, would it not do the same to skin? Skin cells and hair follicles do share similar proteins. And even if a product gets released and miraculously gets approval by the FDA, could it possibly come close to matching the price/performance of a simple safety razor, say nothing of the multiple blade solutions on the market today? I envision a novelty product that barely works, is far too expensive, and causes skin irritation that would make razor bumps feel like a holiday. I even see a potential class action suit in the works if it causes permanent scarring or hair loss... :ponder:

So you all know of the NES Mini and I can't remember if anyone has touched on this one http://www.usgamer.net/articles/retro-bits-generations-console-looks-a-leap-beyond-the-classic-mini-nes-2

Now does Retro Bit really got licenses for the games included on their Generations Console? I only ask cause even though I can no longer post on the RETRO Magazine Facebook page, I still see stuff from it every now and then. And that page is just schilling like crazy for this console.

...

from that article, in a caption:

The tiny Retro-Bit generations (which is barely larger than its Saturn-style controllers)

...nope they are Genesis 6 buttons style controllers, the Saturn controllers (even the Jap ones) look and feel different.

Why don't they fact check their stupid statements? ..... I see, it's retro-journalism we are supposed to take it all in as if drinking from the fountain of youth.

Now wrt to the list I really hope they would indicate which version they emulated between Arcade/NES/SNES (even if the game only exists on one platform it would be nice to know).

And from the retro bit gen page the features:

Features:

Packed with popular retro games from world-renowned developers

2 USB Retro-style six button controllers

HDMI and AV Outputs

SD card slot to save and transfer game progress (SD card not included)

Sleek compact design

Intuitive user interface

Internal game save feature - Save your progress anywhere, any time!

Retro Bit is a legit outfit, if they say they've cleared the rights, I see no reason to doubt them. For the moment, Mike is doing legitimate business with an actual product.

It does seem like Mike is determined to run even this completely-on-the-level opportunity into the ground, though. It feels like he can't help but run his trap when he has nothing to say.

I doubt they would steal games, since a lot of NES games are usually bundled for cheap especially when ATGames been doing the same thing for ATARI/Megadrive and so forth

Heh heh, he has this to say ...

** Pre-Order also includes a discount code to download all (11) RETRO Video Game Magazine back issues for FREE **

I suppose that's a nice alternative, worth about the same as free shipping elsewhere. Personally, I'd rather have free shipping.

Alright cool. I am not familiar with Retro Bit so I thought I would ask :)

Pretty cool. I'll keep an eye out for this one. IIRC all of the NES/SNES titles are published by third parties and most are not included on the NES Mini. Several NES/SNES homebrews on there as well. Thor's quest is a blatant Donkey Kong knock off. Piko Interactive originally released it as Classic Kong (a very nice 16-bit port of DK) before they changed out the graphics and audio.

Anyway if it works with game ROMs backdoor loaded through the SD slot ala Retro Freak, that would be amazing! :ahoy:

Also kudos to Retrobit for including composite -and- HDMI!

He's just a wholesaler. Anyone can buy a bunch of these at a bulk price and sell them for profit. I seriously doubt there's anything clever or sinister going on between Mike Kennedy and Retro-Bit.

Well if the Retrobit PNP actually has bundled with it a whole bunch of the "launch" titles that were originally earmarked for Chameleon, that is fine in my book. Hey, if they paid for the license, might as well sublet them to Retrobit and earn something off the IP. :P

LOL by that logic, he could buy up the 2014 Flashback consoles and present them as "Intellivision Lovers" and "Colecovision Lovers" special things. Maybe with stickers included or something.

IF he paid for the license, he paid with free digital downloads, or paperless stock in an empty shell corporation, or a share of the future profits of chameleon sales, or magic pixie dust, or emperor clothes, or false hopes and empty promises.

Because in the end, he is the only one who lost anything, money, potential opportunity and reputation in this hobby.

Here's a new RETRO Magazine Newsletter update (I moved it into a spoiler tag for those who don't want to see it, both because it's long and because it's Mike):

Hello Everyone! We all hope your summer has been a blast. Now that fall and winter are coming you will have more time inside to do what we all love, play retro video games. To this end, we are excited to announce we are now official retailers for the Retro-Bit and 8BitDo retro gaming product lines. This includes items like the Super Retro Trio, classically inspired USB controllers and the soon to ship Retro-Bit Generations system. Like the Nintendo NES Classic, Retro-Bit is anticipating the Generations system will sell out as well during the holiday season. We have been allocated a good number of these 90+ classic gaming plug-n-play systems and they are available for pre-order here. If you want one of these don't hesitate. If you order now you will be guaranteed one during their first stage of shipments in November. Price is just $59.99 so a pretty good deal for all the games included. And they offer HD AND AV out plus two classic style USB controllers. We hope to have our review system soon and will post videos as soon as we can. This is going to be a great holiday season for retro gamers!

As I am sure you are all aware we are behind the 8-ball on mailing out issues of RETRO Magazine. We have spent time on the 200-page replay issue as well as a special product for a 3rd party accessory manufacturer for the NES Classic. It was a great project and I am sure many of you will end up buying this product and getting our special insert. We will inform you all about this when the time comes. The good news is we are working on ways to increase our sales revenue by now offering the retro gaming merchandise mentioned above. Whenever you purchase something from our RETRO store it will continue to help us propel the magazine forward and help us to get issues out on time. With that said we are wrapping up RETRO Issue #12 in October and also hope to have issue #13 out by year's end. We really appreciate your patience. To thank you, you can now all download all our back issues free of charge using the discount code, "retrodigital". This can be inserted in the Discount Code field when you check out on ShopReadRetro.com. You will have to order the issues separately or in groups of three and download them to your PC first and then transfer to your mobile device if that is what you desire. Enjoy and feel free to share this code with your gaming friends so they can experience RETRO Magazine for themselves. This is a $33 value you can now all get for just being a valued subscriber. And, this code will always be available to you so no rush.

For the first time, RETRO #12 will feature three different cover variations seen above. They will be produced in equal numbers and distributed randomly to subscribers and to newsstands. This will be a very special issue containing many interviews with your favorite retro gaming pioneers as well as a look at the history of video pinball. We also remember Ooga Booga on the Sega Dreamcast and Rally Cross for the Sony PlayStation. All this and so much more!

We want to thank you all again for being a RETRO reader and we hope you will continue to enjoy the magazine as we launch off into our third year.

-Team RETRO

So he's relying on merchandise sales to "continue to help us propel the magazine forward and help us to get issues out on time." I thought all that Kickstarter money was supposed to do that.

WOW. The price is 60 bucks. I hope quality is good.

Interesting that a console with CAPCOM games and a 6 button controller wouldn't come with SFII. Not even "vanilla" (World Warrior). Probably too expensive for these guys, but even AT games got SFII in their crappy Mega Drives.

My guess is, now that Nintendo is going to make millions with their mini console, everybody and their mothers are going to try and get a piece of the pie with their own mini retro console. Too bad My guess includes the fact every single one of those clones are going to be crap.

I will be happy to be proven wrong about this, but I am not touching any of these consoles, including the NES mini, untill many reviews are out.

Now as for Retro Magazine, they're selling it. I don't see anything wrong with that. I mean, I'd rather buy it from a hobo off a dark corner, or just flush 60 bucks down a toilet and wait for a console to pop out of it than order something from Mike K., but that's just me. I don't think there's anything special going on behind the courtains there.
