Lost potential of Jaguar/Jaguar II

I know this is a well trodden path, but seeing games like Phase Zero that looked to have reasonable potential, as well as stillborn's like Skyhammer that are highly impressive makes me wonder what the true ability of the Jaguar was... Especially with the voice modem/game modems for potentially online play... And the Jaguar II might have blown some minds too with the potential that machine might have had... Any thoughts?

Tom's replacement (the Oberon chipset) _did_ in fact blow minds (and more) and was actually used for a time as the "electronic brain" behind a number of powered prosthetics. While the original Jaguar found a second life, in part, in the field of dental macrophotography, its successor's destiny lay in a more more hands-on field.

To build Jaguar 2, I believe you need to sell and get tons of money out of Jaguar 1, and we all know how the story with that went...

Yes, lots of lost potential IF IT HAD WORKED: had it worked great for Atari they would have gotten world supremacy, not Sony and MS, which is not the case based on so many factors (found with the search engine here), but what happened is a much smaller thing. Atari imploded next to Amiga, 3DO, CDi and what have you. Too many systems at one given time.

It's the way of things, that nothing last forever. As everyone else they promised the world, but couldn't convince the masses that was the case. They were yesterdays news with Jaguar at day one.

But Jaguar can potentially be played and enjoyed if you're in to it. Hell, it's a smaller miracle it even exists!

If the Jag only had 3D graphic games instead of mostly 16-bit ports? Yeah it would have stood a chance, but then the Tramiels would still find a way to screw it all up... :(

Actually I would have liked to see more 2d stuff, but that actually took advantage of the Jaguars capabilities, like Rayman, Super Burnout, NBA JAM and Native. But i think i get your point.

About the 16-bit ports, the thing is that they usually were ports of subpar games. If at least we had gotten ports of goodt stuff like Earthworm Jim 1 and 2, Madden, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat. But no, we got Pitfall, Troy Aikman Football, Double Dragon V...

...... would surely have stolen any Thunder the PSX had

Yep, advertising on used toilet rolls would have been much more effective than the millions of dollars Sony pumped into newspapers, magazines, pre-movie adverts, tv slots, etc, etc..... *sigh*

I say "shoulda coulda woulda".

We have a the Jaguar (1) that sold well enough to have a alright set of games, and open enough to port and write new games for. That is a good fact. I like this reality well enough. It is what it is. No amount of writing will change what it is. It wasn't the best game system, though I think it had potential, it wasn't by far the worst. It is a game system you can jump into, try out all sorts of games, and new ones are being made all the time. Love it.

Jaguar 2 is science fiction.

I'm personally of the opinion that Atari should have waited, developed the Jaguar II as the Jaguar, then made the release. 750k polys and CD ROM support would surely have stolen any Thunder the PSX had

If Atari would have waited for the Jaguar II chipset to be finished, they would have been bankrupt before it was finished. At the time of the Jaguar's release, the sales of the ST/Falcon line were in serious decline and could never compete with standard PCs. The Lynx could not compete with the GameBoy despite its superior hardware. Thus the only way to get some cash-flow was to release the Jaguar. The Jaguar made that Atari survived a few years longer.

This.

And given the specs of the hardware, it was already late by its 1993 soft-release - it was more geared up to be a SNES rival than something like the 3do that was aiming to be something of a generational leap than more of the same but a bit better.

But then you look at 1992 and there you have the release of the Falcon. Should they have scrapped that and gone all-in on Jaguar? Then how far back do you have to go to be in a possible Panther release window?

And where is the software going to come from? They struggled to release *anything at all* with the half-arsed tools, buggy hardware that comprised Jaguar. Add yet more complexity to that and you think that's going to make things easier? lolol.

I'm glad things played out as they did. We got the Falcon, an amazing machine that's gimped in a few areas (surprise!) then we got the Jaguar. That both actually happened is amazing in itself.

If they had sat back and waited for better and better versions of Jaguar until they finally had something truly amazing they'd have gone bump long before they actually did.

Sitting at the keyboard stating Atari Shudda Duns is the easiest thing in the world. Probably one of the most pointless and self-defeating.

Jaguar is what it is.
