Difference between 800XE rubber keyboard and 130XE semi-mechanical keyboard

There are two XE keyboard models AFAIK: Mitsumi single layer mylar, sprung plungers, and the rubber cup, dual layer mylar variety which is usually mushy to the touch. You can tell them apart by looking at the metal backplate: the keyboard with the rubber cups has holes in the back where the plastic pillars for the console keys poke through.

There are mushy keyboards and mushy keyboards too.

The ones on my XEGS are really terrible.

The ones in my 800XE's and 65XE's are pretty well I must say.

But hey... my favorite machines are my Atari 800XL's and my Atari 600XL's which have excellent keyboards, so I skip on this ;)

Best has the parts to fix mushy keyboards. http://www.best-electronics-ca.com/130xe.htm

Pictorial (for the rubber cup type): http://www.best-electronics-ca.com/best_xe%20touch%20Install.htm

I did this to a couple of my 130XE and I really like it even though it tires my fingers quickly, but HEY that is what the joystick is for.

I didn't order from BEST I took apart several older PC keyboards and used the cups from them..

Is there any chance you could upload a photo to illustrate the back you describe FJC?
