What is the most ergonomic location for the rotary dial?

I've been thinking of finally ponying up for a rotary controller for Tempest, Impulse X, and any other Jaguar games that utilize it.

 

I was wondering, of the three commonly available options on eBay, what do you all (or from your experience) think would be the most comfortable one that wouldn't cramp your hands after an hour or so of game-play?

My vote would be for the one that replaces the Dpad, but that's just me =)

Without having used one, I would think replacing the d-pad would be the most comfortable. However, having it on the back would probably be the most convenient if you wanted to also be able to use it as a standard controller.

I went for below the D when I built mine. A duo unit is more practical for obvious reasons. I put in a nice black plastic switch which people commented at the time that it looks exactly like it's meant to be there. I have a thread on it maybe 2013-ish.

Another option would be to install a connector on the back of the joystick that you could plug in, for when you actually play those games.

 

 

I searched the Internet and could not come up with the controller I was looking for. The one I'm thinking of is about the size and shape of a toilet paper roll, with about 10 feet of wire and the knob at the top. It had a 1/8" headphone type plug at the end of the wire.

 

This option would not change the look and feel of the originals 'too much', but still allow you to play Tempest as it's meant to be played. Just an idea.
