Scooter83
I'm wondering as I collect what are the rarest atari carts to collect .I've notice utility carts seem to be hard to come by as oppose to word processor and game carts. This doesn't mean it has to be expensive carts but usually are Feel free to lit what you feel are the rarest for the console.

R4ngerM4n
Commercial game carts: Espial, Matterhorn, Spark Bugs, Hypnotic Land, Powerstar
Scooter83
I think the Canadian Mr dos castle is up there on the list. Matterhorn I'd put up there on the list. Would assembler debug cxl4003 (instead of assembler editor name) qualify from the press release as a raree cart since life cxl4005 and checkbook cxl8001 are known. Basic and assembler editor with the different style label Pathfinder seems to be pricy but I've seen a few on ebay Citibank cart and target banking cart. But I would say alot of the 3rd party utility carts seem to be hard to come by.

Different labels are project, or distributor carts again, unless true proto's. There are a zillion utility carts, with low production runs. Espial had to be one of the hardest to get right now. Spark bugs is another. The ROMOX ECPC title line is very hard to get; porky's, etc. And again, boxed is worth considerably more...

Tempest
My top rarest Life cxl 4005 I think that counts as a proto. CXL4005 was never released as Life, only as Video Easel. Your copy is a pre-production/advertising copy.
Atari8bitCarts
Also add to my list. Mr dos castle boxed ?
Scooter83
@tempest. Gotcha. The board has masked roms like the regular so wasn't sure and added anyway. @atari8bitcarts. I can read your list and stare at your collection all day and daydream. One of if not the best a8 collections around I think that counts as a proto. Tempest
@tempest. Gotcha. The board has masked roms like the regular so wasn't sure and added anyway. Really? Interesting. Must have been a pre-production demo copy then before they went with the name change.

Scooter83
It's one masked 1 eprom covered with a gold atari logo stamped 7943. My video easel I believe is the same way .I'll see if I have pictures on my other phone with me and see if here's a way to post them on here via the mobile app
ianoid
I'm dying for a Spark Bugs and an Espial. I'd throw a ton of cash at either of those. I kind of doubt Spark Bugs was even released outside of an ECPC. Was Synassembler ever released outside of a prototype? And is there a Monkey Wrench cart that ISN'T Monkey Wrench II? Romox ECPC cart titles aren't really a cart release for that title.
R4ngerM4n
I kind of doubt Spark Bugs was even released outside of an ECPC. It was definitely released: Please check its entry at Atarimania. Unfortunately I sold my sealed Spark Bugs a long time ago

Not only are there sell sheets but Romox made games only for their charging station. So by definition, they are production. I.E. Porky's, etc. As for Monkey Wrench, yes there is a I, much harder to find. Synassembler came as a cart, but I think you had to order it. Spark Bugs was also boxed with a label, etc. There is a published list of all the know carts. I'm getting ready to update it soon.

I would definitely argue against ECPC titles being unique releases, given the nature of their creation, reuseability and all. It doesn't really matter. It's the same argument NES collectors might have against Sachen releases. Or any collector might have against prototypes being releases. Or hacks, or Taiwan copies. It's a slippery slope, and for me, ECPC carts, however collectible, are not the same as a released game. They are the subset of the world I would call ECPC carts. I heard Synassembler came as a board only. If someone can provide a picture of a cased cart, I'll believe otherwise. I should take it off my list mostly because I don't list utility stuff, even though I collect it.

Frankie
That's fascinating, I would like to know the story behind these... Chemical Bank Online banking in 1984. It was state of the art stuff. You could schedule bills to be paid, transfer money. Most of the screens came right off the cartridge. Only the data had to go over the 300 baud modem. It would cut a check and mail it out to whoever you needed paid. My dad kept complaining the cartridges stopped working and they would send him a new one. He even tried different 600XL's. It was only near the end did he try a new power supply and realized they all worked all along. Edited March 17, 2016 by Frankie

Frankie
Nice carts! I wonder what it looks like in action? Since the services they use are no longer around you just get the splash screen. After that it's trying to dial the modem to a number that isn't going to answer. Edited March 17, 2016 by Frankie
