What do you mean by 'cuts in and out' - do you mean the display is perfect, then the screen goes black, then perfect for a second or two, then black? I am wondering if there's bad connection on the LCD ribbon, or a dry solder joint, bad capacitor, or maybe even the back light lamp is on its last legs.

Yes, the screen goes black, then is good, then flashes on and off every millisecond for a couple seconds. Mainly when I push right and/or up on the d-pad (joypad according to Atari as to not infringe on Nintendo's patent)
