LutzfromOz
I kinda just pieced 2 and 2 together finishing Yoshis island for like the 800th time, anyways, smurf rescue on colecovision, it was a very visionary platformer, its graphics where spectacular it eclipses pitfall graphically, its kinda like the super Mario world for colecovision, colecovision brought mario into familys living rooms, no disrespect to atari vcs donkey kong fans, but colecos donkey kong killed it, even though level 2 didn't have the boucing jacks, factory level... anyways the mushroom aspect that occured in super mario bros on the nes, i think miyamoto played smurf rescue on coleco, and gained inspiration from this game to put mushroom elements into the mario franchise, i mean coleco played a huge part in putting nintendos name in the home videogame market, thoughts please

So if Miyamoto were to have gotten any inspiration for mushrooms for Super Mario Bros from the Smurfs franchise, you'd really have to thank the original creators of the brand, since that is also where Coleco would have gotten the idea. opcode
I see the connection, specially considering that one of the Nintendo engineers specifically mentioned that Coleco's Smurfs was one of the games that got Nintendo's attention.
retroillucid
Besides, Nintendo was quite aware of Coleco's activities Early Famicom games releases all looks like Coleco titles (popeye, DK, DKjr etc....) I think the NES is not much without cartridge mappers Edited July 30, 2016 by retroillucid
youki
I have another theory for mushrooms in Mario. Mario and Luidgi are not carpenters, and not plumbers. Mario and Luigi are in fact Italian's Pizzaïolo. and the Mushrooms in Super Mario are inspired by the Mushrooms you put on Pizza. You just have to check the number of pizzeria in Italy (and in France and surely everywhere in the workd) named Mario's Pizza , or Luigi 's Pizza or even Mario & Luigi Pizza . That was the case long before the apparition Mario character in video game. So Pacman was inspired by a Pizza.... MArio Was inspired by a Pizza... Pizzas rules the world!!! +nanochess
The Nintendo Gameboy hardware is very close to a Colecovision with expansions, even the audio chip has some of the weirdo features of SN76489.
