Ashevent
I just picked up a pristine looking 2600 heavy sixer but when I turn it on, i'm getting blue lines usually across the screen (or other colors) and the occasional high pitched whine. It's so damn clean i'm really hoping to fix it. I'm new to Atari repair , so before I crack into it I was wondering what I should look for and if this is a fairly common problem? Appreciate any help. Ashevent
All pins and carts cleaned, all connections seem good and the inside is actually damn near spotless. but..same thing. Different games may give different colors. Could it be a bad ribbon?
R.Cade
Not likely, but you can test continuity... That cable isn't involved in the connection between cartridge and the board anyway. It's just the switches. I would start swapping chips with another one to determine which has gone bad. Shouldn't take long, there are only 3. Trinity
Just remember to put the IC's back in the same way that you took them out.
Ashevent
Thanks, I'm talking with the good folks at Best Electronics about buying all 3 replacement chips.
Ashevent
Sad News. Bought all three chips, replaced them all and...same problem So I'm sunk dead in the water. Sucks because the case is so damn nice. I guess i'll try and find a ratty one for cheap and just swap the guts. pretty bummed, no idea what else it could even be Does anyone have a board like this though? I was hoping to check one thing for reference. Namely the chip placement. two have nothes facing one way the third was facing the oppostie. not sure if thats correct, I can tell someone was in this before because the old chip was nicked. Now im wondering if someone put the old chip in backward and when I followed suit I just made same mistake.
R.Cade
Chip orientation is correct. Noticed that this is also not a heavy sixer... it's a light. Double, triple check cartridge port is clean and no pins are bent. You're right- there is not much else to it unless you have broken traces somewhere. Thanks, yeah I was just coming back to admit my mistake. I though heavy sixers had raised rings around the switches and light sixers did not. Hence my describing this wrong..a tad embarrassed but new to the atari thing. I was a fairchild guy back then..lol. I've checked all the connections, wires, leads etc. this thing is clean as hell, hence me being so sad about it not working.
zylon
Looks like a badly shorted hex buffer. That's the 4th little IC soldered to the board. Another possibility is that you have the ribbon cable plugged in backwards. I noticed you have quite the twist going on there.
