I was going to get the 99 dollar 3ds but they were sold out. Then he said 1 left. I said not sure. Few on ebay but not crazy like this mini nintendo. And they had more at other stores. But I was not sure. So he said he will hold it and I will decide. Then I said ok I will buy it. But they could not find it. Then I asked him and he asked somebody. They said they gave it to somebody else. He said he told them to hold it but they did not know it was for me and gave it to somebody else. I was pissed off but they looked and its not even sold out. Other stores had a few left. And its not worth. The 99 dollar will close to 150. Because it does not even come with a game. So I am skipping it.

I got a black one today on Amazon. They don't seem quite as supply constrained as the NES Mini, but still a lot of people were complaining in the Amazon reviews that they put them up for sale yesterday and they sold right out. Then they sold out again today right after I bought mine. So I think they are somewhat hard to get, but not like the NES.

They were on target yesterday. Now its says not available for order. But still some left. Evanston IL has in stock. And few others low stock. But this is not bad either.

Does not come with charger but at least one game the 99 dollar one does not.

I think that a lot of people didn't realize that the $99 3DS was NOT an XL version. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the smaller unit. I have the $150 Super Mario 3D Land 3DS and it's great (non-XL and came with the game and 2 sets of interchangeable face plates).

I've seen a lot of people trying to resell the $99 unit for about $175 saying that it "normally" sells for $199. That's pretty annoying.

Yeah the Mario Land one I think is probably just over. If they don't have it near you anymore, it's probably gone. Game's what, 6 months old at this point and now they've got a new loss leader in the $99 system.

I kinda wonder if they're using hardware with marginal cosmetic defects for the $99 system. I've been talking about mine in the 3DS thread; probably gonna send it in to Nintendo for repair.

Ha, shows how much I know (or care) about Mario. Seems odd that they'd promote a system in 2016 with a 5 year old game.

It's a good game, and it's probably past its commercial peak. I think it makes sense to sell it with the system -- the people who don't already have a 3DS are the only ones who haven't played it, right?

I heard the screen on these models isn't that great. Anyone got more details about this rumor?

I dunno, in what way? I have one, but I don't have another 3DS to compare it to.

See my earlier comment, though. I do wonder if these are basically "b-stock" units in general. But it seems like a lot of work for them to actually redesign the screen to be worse. I think if anything, the worst might be that there's more variation in these than in the regular priced units. They might have looser tolerances to ensure higher yields.

From comments on other forums, it does seem like these may be Frankensystems. Seems to be random chance whether you get IPS or TN screens for upper/lower, in any combination. There are also complaints about light bleeding past the edges of the screens because the plastic is too thin on some systems. Also comments about loose or misaligned hinges on some systems. Cut price cases built to clear out leftover 3DS parts?

I got a black system on Black Friday but won't be opening it until Christmas... hopefully it won't have any noticeable issues.

Everyone I've talked to who owns each size of the New 3DS says the smaller screen is considerably better than the larger one. Supposedly, the non-XL New 3DS is also the best for viewing in 3D.

Yeah mine is slightly misaligned when closed, but I believe it's actually that the base of the unit is slightly bent since it doesn't sit flat either. I'm thinking to have mine repaired.

I'm curious about the screens now - will have to check when I get home. I don't believe I have any light bleed *past* the screen edges, though. And I didn't have any issue with viewing angles. Though I did notice that my top screen seemed better than the bottom one, but I figured that was just the way 3DS's probably are (my regular DS is the same). But now I wonder if my top screen is IPS and bottom is TN. How do I know for sure?

Quick method to check 3DS screen types: (stolen from gamefaqs)

http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php

Go to that webpage on your 3DS web browser. On IPS screens you shouldn't be able to see the outline of the black squares until number 8 and up. On TN screens the squares should become apparent at 4 and up.

Well fuck, I can see it on square 4 on the top screen and 8 on the bottom screen. Any way I can complain to Nintendo as it's not supposed to be this way(I mean they never specified what type of screen it is so they'd probably just say oh it can come that way from the warehouse) but I dunno

That test doesn't seem right to me. My laptop, for example, has an IPS screen and I can see every box. On the 3DS, I can see four on top and four on bottom, but clearly my two screens are different; I can post pics later, but the bottom screen washes out really quickly when viewing from the side but the top screen doesn't.

I don't see why an IPS screen should see fewer gradations of black. I checked the original Gamefaqs link and the originator of this test there said it's because IPS displays have "darker blacks". That doesn't make any sense and sounds like someone who doesn't know how screens or color management works. I also went to the Reddit thread that *he* apparently took that info from and there's no reliable info there either, just vague reference to the Japanese wikipedia page (which was probably also written by some random Japanese 2chan user).

This all seems like some kind of circle jerk. There's got to be a more reliable way of testing the screens in these things.

Edit: hilariously, it literally is a big circle jerk. I went to the Japanese wikipedia page for the New 3DS, and it linked to a geek.com article as a source for the IPS display info. The geek.com article links to a NeoGaf thread as its source for that info, and the NeoGaf thread links to the Japanese wikipedia page!

So apparently this info was made up.
