Short Answer:

"No HSC set" means that the presence of high score saving code is not set in the header flag. However, HSC does not mess up when the supported games are played in an emulator.

 

 

Detail Answer:

"No HSC set" is an incorrect header setting for games that do contain high score cart (HSC) saving code (I.E. Asteroids, Centipede, Dig Dug, Food Fight, Galaga, Joust, Ms. Pac-Man, Robotron: 2084, Xevious).

 

For games that do containing HSC saving code, under real hardware, when HSC saving (cart or device) is present, associated screens and saving would be demonstrated. By fixing the HSC flag in the respective ROM image header, it properly reflects the cartridge/game data and behavior.

 

Emulators the support HSC saving (I.E. A7800), and have it enabled, will provide the appropriate HSC saving. Emulators that do not have HSC enabled or do not support the HSC, simply play the game as usual.

 

So, just as would occur under real hardware, it is dependent on whether such HSC saving means are present and enabled, or disabled/absent, that will determine the respective game's behavior under emulation when the header is properly set.

 

 

Thanks. That totally explains it. Of all the games GCC did for the launch, didn't they fail to include HSC support in Pole Position II? I really wish Atari Corp would've went ahead and released the HSC. That would've at least given us 7800 owners something to brag about at the time. At least until Zelda came out.

 

It retroactively cheeses me off to know that the 7800 ProLines did have the Dual Joystick Coupler designed for it but Atari Corp didn't release it. Then again, none of the 3 that were produced in 1984 were in their possession in 1985/86...but still!

A big thanks from me! When you download Trebors 7800 ROM PROPack, you can be sure you're getting the best set of 7800 roms with good a78 headers. The effect this has on the scene is subtle but profound, with newcomers, regulars, and emulator authors all getting a much smoother ride.

 

Over the years there were a lot of reported issues (e.g. no pokey music in Commando!) that were traced back to bad headers or roms. I don't recall seeing any of these issues since trebor took up this project.

I believe what is being recalled is this post.  It included all Retail releases for the system in "Mateos Multi Cart" format.

 

That archive can be acquired from here, or from here.

 

To provide such a thing for the close to 600 HHDP ROMs would be quite a task; unfortunately, not enough hobby time for undertaking such a project in the near future.
