howerton
Hi I have a 1040 stfm and when I boot it with out a disk, tos does not come up. Is tos on a disk? The computer works fine otherwise and I love using it to play games.
atarian1
You need a formatted disk that doesn't autoboot in the disk drive when you turn it on to boot to the GEM desktop. Alternatively, turn on the computer and wait about a minute or so, and the desktop should bootup.
Ayreon
The ST should boot to desk top without a disc. It will take a bit longer than with a disc. Since the very first ST's didn't have TOS in rom, there are discs out there with a TOS version on. I don't know if it is really usefull for you though. A TOS 1.00 disc image should be here: https://www.emuparadise.me/Atari_ST_ROMs/TOS_v1.00_(1985)(Atari_Corp)(ST)[boot_disk]/118043

The computer works fine otherwise and I love using it to play games. The original STs (the ones that have an external disk drive, not internal) did not have TOS in ROM. However the STfm came later, and as far as I knew, they all had TOS 1.0 in rom. Is it really an fm? That would mean it has an internal floppy and an RF port in the back for TV use. howerton
It is a stfm and has a internal disk drive. Perhaps I did not let boot long enough to bring the desktop up. The drive clicks without a disk.
+DarkLord
Just to clarify, early 260ST's had no TOS in ROM and had to boot the OS from a floppy disk. 520ST's, even though they had an external floppy disk and not internal, did have TOS in ROM. At least mine did, late 1985.early 1986... I think (but am not sure) that only the very, very earliest releases might have had TOS on disk and not in ROM... The launch STs (520s in NA) did not have TOS in ROM, the 1040STf which came later-- I think around the time you got your 520, did have it on ROM. By then all models were getting TOS on ROM. tjlazer
There were some early 520ST's that had TOS on disk, I have one here.
StEeLz
On this model, most likely TOS is on chip. - With a blank floppy inserted : boots to GEM within seconds - Empty floppy drive : FD will "seek" slowly for a good minute until GEM appears. If not, you may want to check TOS chip insertion. You can also use SYSINFO.PRG to check your system and TOS version. Cheers, B.
tjlazer
I have a 1040STf that has TOS 1.4 that does a weird thing. If I turn it on without a disk in the drive, after a bit the TOS desktop comes up but without the disk icons (A:, B:) But if I put in a blank disk or a disk that does not autoboot, it shows the normal desktop with the icons.
