MaliciousCarp
I'm just curious here- I recently added a C64 that had been modded with Jiffy DOS to my collection. Part of the mod was a switch to use either the standard OS or the Jiffy DOS version. Is there a reason to not use Jiffy DOS? are the compatibility issues with some software? 7800fan
Only works when paired with disk drives that also have JiffyDOS. Without disk drives, leave the system in original mode. Manygames will work fine with JiffyDOS, it's rare I find a game that doesn't work at all and forces me to run normal mode.
motrucker
As 7800fan said, leave the Jiffy DOS off until you get a ROM for a drive. There is very litle advantage with out the drive ROM installed. The switch is needed for a very few programs that don't like JD, or in case you want to use a utility cartridge rather than JD. You can get new JD ROMs from Jim Brain, at Retro Innovations: http://store.go4retro.com/
+wongojack
If you get the Ultimate 1541, you can put it in JD mode and take advantage.
+OLD CS1
The DOS wedge in JD can be pretty handy on its own.
carlsson
The SD2IEC series devices also support JiffyDOS.
MaliciousCarp
Thanks for the great answers! I do have a 1541 drive that I suspect has bad ROM chips. that might be a good candidate to mod - since it appears that JiffyDOS replaces the ROM chips. That would solve two problems The SD2IEC series devices also support JiffyDOS. I was considering getting an SD2IEC for that machine - so I am really glad to hear that it is supported. motrucker
If you get the Ultimate 1541, you can put it in JD mode and take advantage. You still need the drive ROM, no matter how you end up with the computer's JD ROM.
+wongojack
Yes you do - It is available for purchase and download here.
7800fan
SD2IEC comes with JifftDOS rom installed.
carlsson
Almost. SD2IEC detects the JiffyDOS protocol and serves files according to it. That is not the same thing as executing the JD ROM, and since SD2IEC doesn't fully emulate a 15X1 anyway, it would have limited use of the ROM file. One though can use ROM files as "dongles" to have the device identify itself as something else, e.g. if you enable a 1581 ROM you can use the Action Replay 6 turbo loader designed for the 1581 (as the 1541 turbo loader is more complex and not supported by SD2IEC firmware last time I checked). Punishermark
I just did a JiffyDOS install in my C64 breadbin last week with a 1541 Ultimate II. You need the JiffyDOS C64 chip and the JiffyDOS 1541 bin file to load onto the Ultimate. Man is it fast!!!
