Actually, a splash screen typically shows up at launch time.

Sure, but it comes from the "splash" graphics in comic books and magazines. As the article you linked to starts: "A splash screen is a graphical control element..."

actually there are at least two: one with copyright of 1978 and one with copyright of 1979... there's nothing certain in this world

That's not true...

There's Death & Taxes.

I also call it the "Title Screen." I believe Mattel called it the "Copyright Notice."

My mistake, Mattel indeed calls it the "Title Screen." This is the term used in the EXEC documentation and in the BSR site. I confused it with "Copyright Notice" because they both mention a "Copyright Routine," but this was not to draw the screen, but to "fix" the copyright line itself in case a game needed to mention a third party other than Mattel (e.g., TRON, D&D, Electric Company, etc.).

I confused it confusion because that is the routine that third-party programmers (and indeed home-brewers) to draw their own title screens and hijack system control from the EXEC and into their own games.

Anyway, "Title Screen" it is. :)
