keepdreamin
Not asking for installation help (I can figure that out easy enough), just a suggestion for which OS. retropie, recalbox, or lakka? One thing that puts me off about emulation is constant tweaking, so the simple the better. Don't really care for tons of filter options, maybe just occasional scanlines. concerns would be minimal input lag, ease of bluetooth controller pairing and setup I've read differing opinions that while retropie is more complicated, it's gotten easier with newer revisions and it's the one that sees the most frequent work. thoughts? Flojomojo
That's my understanding. I'm sure the underlying emulators are similar if not identical. Retropie is great. If you have time in your hands, it's not difficult to try the others, just time consuming. I did Retropie and have no burning desire to try the others, especially because it would mean giving up Odyssey 2 emulation. Gotta have Odyssey 2. +LS650
I use RetroPie. Some emulators are very straightforward, a few like the 5200 are not.

Retropie is: copy the image to an SD card, add your roms and boot. It's pretty simple. I have not tried the others you listed. The one other I have used is PiPlay (formerly PiMame), it was also pretty simple.
Gamemoose
For the arcade side of things, on a dual stick controller can you assign spinners and such to either stick?
Flojomojo
For the arcade side of things, on a dual stick controller can you assign spinners and such to either stick? It's highly configurable. You can tweak each game individually, or do whole categories, but it gets pretty geeky fast if you go too far afield from the defaults.
Everett1954
That's my understanding. I'm sure the underlying emulators are similar if not identical. Retropie is great. I did Retropie and have no burning desire to try the others, especially because it would mean giving up Odyssey 2 emulation. Gotta have Odyssey 2. Recalbox has O2 emulation and it works well. It is also much easier to config and set up. The downside, Recalbox does not have as many emulators (no colecovision, intellivision or 5200/800xl) and you can't just add them, you have to wait for next Recalbox build. Also when it comes to MAME (arcade) you can select which emulator core to play a particular rom. Example, Juno First (arcade) will not play on Recalbox but will on Retropie (when you select the right emulator core). Retropie also lets you select how you want your games to be displayed per emulator or rom (480, 720 1080 etc) I have tried lakka and haven't had any luck. could not get a working PI3 image. For an easy to setup system go with Recalbox. If you need all the systems and like to configure, go with Retropie. Try Lakka last.. keepdreamin
wound up installing retropie. Setup was pretty easy, tweaking the emulators takes a bit of research, but isn't too bad. already settled on a case: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/259700-sega-genesis-mini-hdmi-build-from-genesis-mini-usb-hub-and-pi-zero/?do=findComment&comment=3699549
fujidude
I tried recallbox because it was newer and thought it might be an improvement, but I ended up trying retropie too and like it best.
+LS650
I find with Retropie that most emulators are very easy to install and use, but a few can be a real pain.
NE146
I've said it before, but I had a lot of trouble wrestling with emulators on the rpi3 & Retropie. But everything's figured out now.. *whew*
