Recommended Posts

I know I'm posting this a bit early, but there's a lot of work going into this episode so I want to get what I can get as early as I can.

I'm looking for feedback for episode 6 of the Atari 7800 Homebrew Podcast (you can find it on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play, or use this feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/homebrew78 )

What are your thoughts on Jr. Pac-Man on the 7800?

You can also e-mail text or audio to homebrew78 -at- fab4it -dot- com

Deadline is, kinda-sorta, 11:59pm CST on Thursday, March 9. Any comments from after then will be addressed in a later episode.

Best home version of Jr. Pac-Man I've ever played. And unlike every other version I've played - this one is actually fun without being balls hard! Great graphics, animation, gameplay - it's got everything you'd expect out of another Pac-Man game from PacManPlus.

Since getting this for the 7800, I won't even attempt to play the 2600 version anymore. And the C64 version? Forget about it.

A version of Jr. Pac is soon to be released for the Intellivision as well. I'm sure it will be great in its own special way (as the other Intellivision Pac-Man games are), but for me, the 7800 version will remain my go-to for when I want some side-scrolling Pac action.

Hazy memory, but the first time I remember playing Jr Pac Man was at Zayre or possibly Venture's. I enjoyed the intermission story.

20 years later, I found it for 2600- a hard, challenging game, but very enjoyable- one of my top 20 'must own' games.

Then came the 5200 proto. The game code tries to center the joystick on startup, which usually caused me more trouble than it was worth. Imagine playing several games where Jr won't go right, and always tries to go up. Ugh.

Then came Bob. I was reluctant to purchase at first (why can't it just be on pac-man collection? I was being cheap) but I finally bit the bullet.

Jr is another example of Bob's high standard of quality. It sounds like the 2600, but that doesn't detract from the experience like Dig Dug or Desert Falcon etc. I especially appreciate the 3/5 lives and fast/slow options. A favorite port of a favorite game.

This is by far the best version available on a home console and is one my go-to games on the 7800.

Bob has faithfully captured the arcade experience with this port. I also love the fact that he added turbo mode as an option. This game cries out for an Edladdin controller or other form or arcade stick. Though, with Ed Kelly's Easy 78 boards coming soon, I am strongly considering buying a replica Pac-stick and wiring one up myself. :)

It’s been a while since I last played Jr. Pac-Man, so I'll have to give it a few plays before I can provide an opinion. However, I wanted to mention that the upcoming release of TIME: Salvo will support AtariVox speech. I mention this because you were wondering what other 7800 games might include AtariVox speech.

This game is excellent. Very much like an updated Crossfire with elements of Robotron, (i.e. Hulk and twin stick compatibility). I'm eagerly awaiting the release of this game.

I really like this version of Jr. Pac-Man. The gameplay is smooth, the graphics and intermissions are great and it sounds good. Add in the easter egg and now you have two great games on one cart.

This game provides a great workout for my Edladdin Supreme 78: All-Play 4/8. :-D

7800 Jr. Pac-Man is a fantastic port of the Arcade original. Not holding quite the charm and balance of Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man, Jr. Pac-Man is still a good game in its own right, especially on the 7800, and here's why…

The most frustrating item surrounding Jr. Pac-Man is the default speed settings in which the monsters appear to overtake Jr. They are much more aggressive and rapid than the previous titles. This problem is compounded by a large scrolling maze playfield with no escape tunnels to slow the monsters down.

A triple threat comes in the form of bonus items creating large dots which also slow down Jr.

As a side note, the game isn’t impossible. It is considerably more challenging than the ‘parents’ out the gate; however, one may become just as good with this title as with the predecessors, it takes practice and patience. In an Arcade setting, it certainly is understandable that may not have been feasible or desirable for a considerable number of individuals (*Raises Hand*).

The 7800 port comes in though and counters the issues with the Arcade original by offering the available configuration of two items: 1. Number of men (From 3 to 5), and 2. The option for a 'fast' Jr. as opposed to his normal speed.

Those two items makes even the most apprehensive and dissatisfied of Arcade Jr. Pac players able to give the game another try. For the skeptical and extra timid, there is even a "Teddy Bear" mode which greatly decreases the difficulty of the monsters and starts the game on an easier maze.

The game sounds great and looks great. Intermissions are all present and as an extra bonus a "Plus" mode is included featuring all the wacky antics of the way power pellets and bonus items interact with the game often deviating from the expected; sometimes even turning the maze board invisible for a while. It's like having two games-in-one, or at least a deluxe edition along with the standard edition available with the included "Plus" Easter egg.

So what's wrong with it? Nothing; seriously, it’s really hard to find a negative thing about the game, unless one just does not like the game itself.

If you absolutely hate Jr. Pac-Man this game will probably do nothing to change that, but still respectively request to give it a try with 5 lives, fast mode, and even begin on the "Teddy Bear" maze. Unless you’re hell-bent with hatred for it, there may very well be a change in attitude towards this terrific port. If you're so-so about the game, this port may very well make you a fan when incorporating the same aforementioned tweaks.

For those that already like or love the Arcade game, it doesn't get better than this. The best port of Jr. Pac-Man available for any home console or computer, it should be a part of every 7800 owner’s collection.

Forgot to mention that I also like how this game represents the dots more accurately; smaller, more arcade like vs. the ones in Pac-Man Collection. I know there exists a smaller dot version of PMC, but why it's NOT the standard in the AA store is a mystery. :(

Bob, the programmer, just revealed a secret code that allows you to play Jr Pac man plus- It's those little extra details that turn an already fun game into a Must Own.

Can your share the secret code?

Edit:

Found it :)

Player two fire button + Pause button just before / during the monster 'introduction' screen. You'll know you have it when you see the smaller 'antennae' monsters come out instead of the regular ones

Thank you for all of the kind words, guys... Thank you, thank you... :)

BTW, I never liked the 'smaller dot' versions of any of the Pac-Man games I did, only for the simple fact that you can't "center" the smaller dots in each cell.

To me, I'd rather the dots be larger and be centered.

It bothers my OCD. :D

Oh - I wasn't aware some weren't centered!! Thanks for the explanation - that sort of thing would bug my OCD too.
